My heart tightens, I love her little ass so much it hurts. I’ve worked so hard to be everything she needs. She’s seen me when no one else has.

“Fuck,” I roar. “Ally, wait.”

She flips me the bird. I start to jog after her, my long legs eating the distance up quickly. I catch her arm to halt her.

“I’m sorry. Please talk to me.”

“Why can’t you see what I see, Cane? Why don’t you understand this hasn’t been about you? My sister is insane, and Sid is just as crazy. They have beaten the shit out of gang members for me. Lita was one of them. They put them in the hospital to keep me safe. I fucked up. I opened a door I shouldn’t have and now my sister is in danger because of me.

“Chlo isn’t going to fall back and allow this. She’s going to go to war for me. I can’t let that happen. That’s why she doesn’t know. Telling her about you comes with the whole truth. She’s not stupid.”

She rolls her tear-filled eyes and pulls her earbuds out to push them into her ears before she storms off again. I run my hands through my hair.

Chloe isn’t the only one willing to go to war for her, and I need her to see that. I’m here, I’m going to make it so she can talk to her sister the way she wants. I’ve got her.

I just need her trust. Lost in thought, I start to follow after her. I’m dragging my feet because I don’t know where to start to fix this.

I look up at the sound of Clay bellowing Ally’s name. It all happens in slow motion. My heart starts to race.

“Ally,” I roar.

Chapter 51

A Team

Chloe

My phone buzzes on the countertop as I return to the kitchen for a glass of water. I tighten the silk robe around me as a chill runs through me. When I check the phone it’s a text from Sid.

Sid: Are you still up?

Me: Yeah, what’s up?

Sid: I have something to tell you. Can you come down to the lobby? I’m waiting for Clay.

Me: Sure. Give me a sec.

My curiosity is piqued. I can hear Ethan snoring in the room beside Chloe’s, and I’m sure he has the baby monitor turned on. I take my sore body into the bedroom and change into a pair of leggings and a T-shirt.

I’m lost in my thoughts as I ride down to the lobby. I was so close to telling Gregor I love him. I don’t know what’s holding me back anymore.

It may just boil down to my stubbornness. I could put us both out of our misery, but I’ve been holding on to the past so tightly. It’s a very real past for me. Yet, I know he gets that.

I sigh as the elevator doors open. Sid has the widest smile on her face as I come into view. I pick up the pace to reach her.

“You guys left before I could talk to you. I’ve been keeping this to myself. I couldn’t wait to tell you,” she gushes.

“What? You’re killing me?”

“I’m pregnant,” she squeals.

I stumble back a bit. It’s not the reaction I mean to have. However, her words are like a punch to the gut. Sid and Clay are so happy. They’ve overcome their differences. Gregor and I are at an impasse that I don’t know how to cross.

“Chloe?” Sid says, reaching out for me.

“I’m so happy for you,” I push out.

“You know I know you better than that. What just happened?”

“It was Gregor. The guy who broke my heart, it was him,” I gasp.

“Yeah, I sort of got that.” She nods.

“But what I never told you was that I was pregnant. I… I terminated the pregnancy. He left to start his life over, to get out from under his father. I… I didn’t know what else to do,” I say.

“Oh, Chloe. I’m so sorry. I didn’t know. I wouldn’t hav—”

“No, please don’t think you can’t share this with me. I want to be here for you every step of the way,” I cut her off. “I think… I think it just hit me that that’s what…”

I trail off as I see my sister walking toward the lobby doors, but it’s not the sight of her that grabs my attention. It’s the car speeding toward her. It’s like everything moves in slow motion.

Clay appears and starts to shout, grabbing Cane’s attention as he walks a distance away from Ally. Cane starts to run toward Ally and Gregor’s red Jag comes out of nowhere. It flies in front of the speeding car, taking the force of the impact.

I watch as my husband’s car shields my sister’s life by placing his own in danger. The red car flips into the air and I swear I don’t breathe until it lands on its top, upside down.
