I was so preoccupied that I failed to notice Shelley had moved to sit at my desk while she ate her lunch.

“Hey, Remy,” she said with a sly smile. “How did the boss like his perfect lunch from his perfect little secretary?”

“It was fine,” I replied, my head whirring with thoughts of Griff’s strange behavior and the news of the big move. I barely paid attention to Shelley’s teasing.

“What’s going on?” Shelley asked as her eyes narrowed. “You’re not in your usual good mood after seeing Griff.”

“Well, that’s exactly the problem,” I replied as I lowered my voice to a whisper and pulled up a chair to sit down next to her. “Griff isn’t acting like his usual self… I don’t like it.”

As I spoke, Shelley rolled her eyes and let out a huff. “If you mean he isn’ barking orders left and right and expecting total obedience from everyone around him then maybe that’s a good thing.”

I rolled my eyes too. “You’re totally exaggerating,” I argued, “Griff is a great boss. He’s just a natural leader. Every time we’ve followed his ideas, the company has always been better for it. You can’t deny that.” From the look on Shelley’s face, I realized that I had laid it on a little thick, but it wasn’t like I was wrong.

“He’s not that bad,” Shelley acquiesced with a shrug. “But I don’t like what he does to you.”

“What?” I hissed, shocked. “What do you mean?”

“You know what I mean. You have a totally unhealthy obsession with our boss!” she stated with a hand firmly on her and the same no-nonsense expression I’d seen on her face one too many times before.

I looked over my shoulders to check that no one was listening to us before I responded, “You’re crazy. I don’t have an unhealthy obsession with Griff! I’m not some kind of crazy stalker or anything. I just like the guy.”

“A little too much,” Shelley remarked with a sideways glance.

I pouted. Shelley and I usually got on really well and I didn’t like to be on the wrong side of her. I knew my fantasies about my super hot boss weren’t going to get anywhere anyway, so what did it really hurt?

“Look, Remy, I’m just worried about you,” she told me with a sigh. “Griff is a self-proclaimed lifelong bachelor. Everybody knows that and he’s never tried to hide it. I’m just worried that you’re wasting the best years of your life carrying a torch for him when you could find another guy, a nicer one, who you could settle down with.”

I didn’t know what to say to that. It felt like an impossible feat. How on Earth was I supposed to even look at other guys when Griff was the only man on my mind? With Griff in the picture, no other guy even compared. I wasn’t sure they ever would again. To me, Griff was perfect.

“Remy, it’s just something to consider, okay?”

I nodded though I had little intention of thinking about anyone but Griff. Instead, my thoughts strayed back to the changes Griff told me about. If the company had been sold then whatever changes came our way could be a good thing. After all, Griff confided in me about them. Maybe I could find some way to help him out and we’d spend more time together. Maybe this could be the start of something for the two of us…

“Okay, I’ll let you get back to work. If you need anything, just let me know, okay?” Shelley said as she stood and gathered her things.

“I will, Shelley, thanks,” I told her as I sat back at my desk and began tapping away on the computer again.

Yes, this change might just be my chance.

As I stood outside the familiar townhouse where my mom lived, I smiled for the first time that day. It was a Tuesday, which was the day every week that I usually went to have dinner at her house. After all the worrying about Enviropak’s sale, it was a relief to know that I could finally go and see one of the most important people in my life. I lifted my hand and pressed down on the doorbell before waiting with a small bouquet of daisies and a smile.

“Griffin!” my mom cried in joy when she saw my face. “I’m so happy to see you.” She threw her arms around my shoulders and gave me a long hug.

“It’s good to see you too, Mom,” I said as I pulled away and held out the flowers to her. “These are for you.”

“Oh, Griffin, you shouldn’t have!” she told me with a wide smile as she took the flowers. “But they are so beautiful. Now, hurry inside. I’ve made your favorite meal today and I don’t want it to get cold!” She turned and took a few steps to the side so I could follow her through the doorway and toward the dining room.
