My heart stopped. Isaac clearly knew that our relationship was a lie. What if he told Kelly? What if…

Before I could begin to panic too much, Isaac leaned in close to me. “Don’t worry, Remy, your secret is safe with me,” he whispered. “Griff is my friend. I wouldn’t betray him like that.”

I calmed down a little at his reassurance. “How did you know?” I asked in a quiet voice.

“It’s Griff,” Isaac said as if that explained everything. “He’s been a bachelor for so long that there was just no way. Besides, I was the one who gave him a heads up about the Anderson Group. I wanted him to do something like this. I’d hate to see a good friend and employee fired, you know?”

The line for the buffet was moving along quickly. Both Isaac and I collected plates and began to pile them with pastries and fruits. For a while, I considered asking Isaac more about Griff. If I told him about the incident last night, perhaps Isaac could have shed some light on Griff’s behavior. Maybe Isaac knew why Griff left me alone the next morning. If I asked him, I thought he might have some answers. But I couldn’t ask. The thought of explaining aloud how I was abandoned by Griff made my throat feel thick and my breathing come fast and sharp.

“You done, Remy?” Isaac asked with a smile after he grabbed a cup of coffee.

I nodded.

“Come sit with me,” he said with a bright smile.

I couldn’t refuse. I’d already felt so lonely this morning that the idea of having company while I ate was appealing, especially with someone as friendly as Isaac. Besides, I was still hoping to get some more information out of him about Griff.

Isaac led me toward a small table out of the way where hardly any of the other conference guests were sitting. He pulled out my chair for me like a gentleman and smiled before sitting down next to me. For a few moments, we were both silent as we dug into our food. All of a sudden, I felt ravenous and then remembered that I had probably worked up quite an appetite the night before.

“So, what do you think about the whole Anderson family values thing?” I said to Isaac as I attempted to squash down memories of the night before.

Isaac was silent for a few seconds before shrugging. “In all honesty, Remy, a lot of powerful people in business have their own quirky ways of doing things,” he told me. “I have to admit that Mr. Anderson is a bit more full on than most. He definitely takes things a lot farther than other people, but hey, if you’re rich and powerful, you can do what you want, right?” Isaac rolled his eyes as he took another sip of his coffee.

“Do you think Mr. Anderson will always be on our backs like this?” I asked as I twirled a strand of my hair around my finger. “I’m not sure how long I can keep this up…”

Isaac shook his head. “I don’t think it’ll be long now,” he divulged. “We just need to get through the transition in one piece. Then, Mr. Anderson will be gallivanting off to his next acquisition and Enviropak will just be an old memory.”

“You really think so?” I asked, feeling a sense of relief flow through me at the thought of this being over sooner rather than later.

Isaac nodded. “It’s been the pattern before with the Anderson Group, I don’t see why this would be any different. So, you just need to make it through the next few months and everything will be fine, okay, Remy?”

“Okay,” I agreed with a nod before sighing. Isaac was acting like a few months was nothing, but I’d already struggled for just a few weeks. How on Earth was I meant to get through this without getting my heart broken? It didn’t seem possible. I couldn’t stop myself from falling for Griff already, how would I feel in a few more weeks? Months?

I stared blankly down at my coffee, feeling torn. Maybe Shelley was right…

Griff

Under normal circumstances, I would have been engrossed by the speakers at today’s conference. I was passionate about the environment and the ways that our company could benefit from more alternatives to plastic. However, I just couldn’t concentrate. I spent all day running from conference room to conference room without taking a break as I tried to keep my thoughts off of Remy and what had happened the night before, but nothing worked.

No matter the topic, my mind was drawn back to Remy like a moth to a flame. I couldn’t help remembering what she felt like the night before. She had been so soft and pliant in my hands like putty. I had moulded her to my own touch, leaving my mark deep inside her with every passionate thrust of my hips. I’d never wanted to stop making love to her and yet, come morning, I panicked.
