Mitch motioned for Michelle and I to go first.

As we walked in, Michelle said, “Good evening, Mrs. Smith. I’m Michelle Jones.”

Wyatt’s mom had a powerhouse smile. Now, I knew where Wyatt had gotten it from.

“Please, call me Alice.” Turning, she looked at me, and I swore, she smiled bigger. “You must be Skylar. Wyatt has talked a lot about you.”

I forced a smile while trying to calm my pulse and steady my breathing. Extending my hand to hers, I replied, “Wyatt’s amazing. You must be so proud of him.”

Out of the corner of my eye, I caught Michelle’s smile. I kicked myself for what I’d said. “He’s a great friend,” I added.

“Thank you, Skylar. He is a pretty amazing.”

She turned to Mitch.

“Good evening, Mrs. Smith. I’m Mitch Woods, Skylar’s brother and Michelle’s boyfriend.”

“You’re all so polite here in Texas. Please, call me Lynn. Would any of you like a drink?”

We all declined just as Wyatt came walking in. My heart slammed against my chest. I wasn’t sure why, but he looked even hotter than ever. He wore a Texas A&M baseball cap, and his tight light-blue T-shirt made his green eyes look almost blue. Swallowing hard, I took in his massive chest. It wasn’t like I’d never seen his body before, so I wasn’t sure what was going on with me. My reacted in a way I wasn’t used to. It had to be the baseball cap. If he turned it around and wore it backward, I was pretty sure my ovaries would explode.

Wyatt walked up and smiled down at me. “You okay? You look a little pale.”

Oh, it’s nothing. I just want to wrap my arms around you and beg you to kiss me.

My mouth fell open. What is the matter with me?

“I’m good. Fine. I think it’s because I haven’t had enough water today.”

Michelle let out a fake laugh. Scowling, I turned to her.

“We should probably get going. The movie is starting soon,” Michelle said.

“You kids have fun. And be careful driving, Mitch.”

“Yes, ma’am. Will do.”

It wasn’t lost on me how Wyatt kissed his mother good-bye and then took my hand in his. My stomach dipped the moment he touched me. The way he made me feel was totally new. With Jacob, I would get butterflies in my stomach, but Wyatt brought so many more feelings out of me. It almost scared me.

The drive to the movies wasn’t that long, but it was long enough for me to almost combust while sitting next to Wyatt in the backseat. He and Mitch talked about football the entire way.

Wyatt grabbed my hand again as we walked into the movie theater.

“Do you always hold hands with your friends?” I asked.

I was terrified what his answer was going to be. I’d seen him talking to other girls before, but he didn’t look at them like he looked at me. At least, in my mind, I thought he looked at me differently. Michelle and Mitch had said he did.

Wyatt’s face lifted into a smirk as he answered, “No, never.”

My heart leaped to my throat, and I had no idea how to respond to that. My head was spinning, and I was beyond confused.

Did Wyatt want more than a friendship? What would people say if we started dating? He would be shunned. It was bad enough that he risked social suicide by being my friend.

“Sky…are you okay tonight?”

Turning to look at him, I smiled. I needed to stop overthinking this and enjoy my time with him. “I’ve never been better.”

His smile took my breath away.

“Good. Wait until tomorrow night.”

With an inquisitive look, I asked, “Tomorrow night?”

The movie started, and all Wyatt did was wink. He turned and said something to Mitch, and then he focused on the previews.

Tomorrow night? What is he doing tomorrow night? Shit! He must have forgotten I said I would be watching the meteor shower.

Leaning over, I asked in a whisper, “What’s tomorrow night?”

“A surprise.”

Oh no, he forgot.

“Um…Wyatt, did you forget? I have a star date with my brother Skip.”

He looked at me and grinned from ear to ear. “I haven’t forgotten. I’m coming along.”

My eyes widened in surprise. “Oh…okay.”

The movie started, and I quickly found myself settling in. I hadn’t been to the movies in forever. Every time I came, I would think of Charlie and that horrible night.

My eyes started growing heavy as I fought to keep them open.

The next thing I knew, Wyatt was softly calling my name. “Skylar? Sky, wake up.”

Opening my eyes, I realized I had my head on his shoulder. Quickly pulling it away, I looked around at the people streaming out. “Oh no! I fell asleep.”

With a chuckle, he took my hand in his and pulled me up into a standing position. “I’m sure it’s from all the studying, right?”

I laughed and playfully hit him in the stomach. “Yeah, that’s why I’m so tired.”
