“Are you in there?” It was my best friend Autumn. After peeing on a stick, I had texted her and asked her to come over. “Or have you been kidnapped?”

I cracked the door open so she could only see an inch worth of my face.

“You’re hiding. Why are you hiding?” she asked.

“Is Amy home?”

Amy was my roommate.

“No?” Autumn frowned. “What’s going on? Why are you hiding from your roomie?”

I opened the door wider and stepped out.

“Because I don’t want her to witness the emotional meltdown I’m about to have.”

Selfish and self-centered, Amy wasn’t the supportive type. Somehow my positive pregnancy tests would be all about her.

“You’re about to have an emotional meltdown?” Autumn looked even more confused. She folded her arms across her huge boobs and gave me her teacher scowl, like I was one of her fifth graders. “Aright, Honey Bee Scott, what the hell is going on? When you messaged me and asked me to drop by on my lunch break, I thought you must be sick. And just as well, I have a key, Honey, because I was knocking on the door for a full five minutes! Now, for the love of God, what the fucking hell is going on?”

I steadied myself against the door. “I’m pregnant.”

All the oxygen seemed to leave the room. Vanquished by the P word.

Autumn cocked an eyebrow. “That stopped being funny when we turned twenty-one. What’s really going on?”

I didn’t argue. I took the three pregnancy tests out of the sink and showed her. She avoided touching them by leaning in and looking at the little window on the top of each test. Two pink lines.

She looked up at me. “You’re pregnant!”

“Yes, and I have six pink lines to prove it.”

My best friend exhaled deeply. “Fucking hell.”

“I know, right?”

I threw the tests back into the sink and stomped out to the family room where I flopped down onto the couch. I grabbed hold of my DO WHAT YOU LOVE EVERY DAY pillow and hugged it to me.

Autumn sat next to me. “It’s going to be okay.”

I looked at her. “I’m pregnant, Autumn. How on Earth is that ever going to be okay?”

“Is it Charlie’s?”

“No. We didn’t have sex after my last period, which was only a few days before I caught Charlie getting his dick sucked by his Amazonian girlfriend.” I huffed out a deep breath of the disappointment I always felt when I thought about him having another girlfriend. “I mean, maybe it’s a possibility, I don’t know. But I don’t think so.”

“So Mr. No Name is the daddy?”

“When you put it like that, it sounds even worse.”

But she was right. I didn’t even know the name of my one-night stand.

All I knew was that he was a member of the Kings of Mayhem motorcycle club, and that he had the bluest eyes I’d ever seen.

And the biggest cock I’d ever fucked.

“What are you going to do?”

“I’ll make an appointment to see Doctor Perry this afternoon. Find out how far along I am. My night of debauchery was just over nine weeks ago. The last time I had sex with Charlie was almost twelve weeks ago.”

“If it’s Charlie’s?”

“I’ll tell him.”

“And if it’s ol’ blue eyes?”

I sighed and hugged my pillow tighter. “I don’t know.”

“Either way, you’re keeping it?”

I looked at her over my pillow. “Yes.”

She exhaled deeply, but then smiled. “Well, then. Let’s go find out who your baby daddy is.”

“Are you ready?” Autumn asked.

I was about to find out if my baby was going to have Charlie’s brown eyes, or the blue eyes of my one-night stand. I was on the bed, waiting for the doctor as she prepared the ultrasound, and drew in a deep breath. My heart was a drum in my chest. I was at a crossroad. A big fucking crossroad. And the outcome of this sonogram was going to decide what road I was going to go down. I glanced nervously at Autumn. She squeezed my hand and gave me one of her comforting smiles.

“Right, here we go,” Dr. Perry said as he squirted a cold lube on my flat belly and began rubbing it around with a transducer. Within seconds, the boom-boom of a heartbeat filled the small treatment room.

“Is that my baby?”

It was a totally lame question.

But Dr. Perry smiled. “It sure is. And it sounds like a strong heartbeat.” Totally unexpectedly, tears stung at my eyes. I looked at Autumn, who grinned back at me. That was my baby’s heartbeat. All of a sudden it was all very real. I had a tiny little human growing in my belly.

“Can you tell how far along I am?” I asked.

“Absolutely.” Dr. Perry leaned over to press a key on the ultrasound. “You are exactly nine weeks and two days along.”

My heart launched itself into my throat.
