“Are you sure?” she questions, the heaviness of the situation reflected in her eyes, and while she has no idea what this is about, I know she’s felt a difference in me ever since the courthouse. “It seemed … important.”

“It is,” I agree. “But nothing is more important than the people in this room and getting you all better. I swear, it’s nothing that can’t wait a few more days.”

“Okay,” she finally relents, a nervous grin pulling at the corner of her lips. “But ummm … speaking of when we get home. You and I are about to jump ahead a few years in our relationship because I’m moving in with you.”

I stare down at Bri, not understanding how we got here. “Okay,” I tell her. “But first, you need to explain what the fuck is going on.”

Bri laughs and glances across at Addison. “Ask your sister,” she says as Addie glances up and looks back at us with an awkward cringe, knowing damn well what we’re talking about. “She’s the one who got me cut off.”

Well, shit.

Chapter 6

BRIELLE

Tanner strides into my hospital room looking like a new man, freshly showered and somewhat rested. At least that makes one of us. Addison and Jax got to go home two days ago while I’ve been stuck here, staring at the wall with nothing to do.

It’s been a little over a week since Colby’s attack at the track. To be fair, Addison and Jax only got to go home because they were able to shit … I, on the other hand, have not.

“You shit yet?” Tanner questions, giving me a stupid ass grin.

“I’m going to smack you.”

Tanner laughs, and I cross my arms over my chest to sulk. Who would have known having internal trauma would have caused such a pain in my ass … literally. I’ve got no one to blame but myself … and Colby, of course.

Addison and Jax had no problem shitting with everyone in the adjoining room, but apparently, I’m a little shy in that department. Jax certainly wasn’t shy though. I don’t know what was worse, the smell that wafted out after him, or the sounds Addison and I had to endure during it. The whole thing only got worse when I refused to take laxatives, and now, I’m regretting that decision.

Tanner sits in the chair beside my bed. “How’s the pain going? Getting any better?”

“Yeah, I can move around a lot easier now, but it still sucks. Last night, I was drinking some water and it went down the wrong way. When I started coughing up my lungs, it hurt so bad I had to force myself to choke in silence.”

Tanner stares at me, his face twisting with indecision. “What?” I question, my gaze narrowing on him.

“I don’t know if I should laugh at you or say something to make you feel better.”

Letting out a sigh, I reach for his hand and glance off toward the window. “To be honest, I’m kind of sick of people trying to say things to make me feel better. There’s literally nothing anyone can say to make me feel better about my situation.”

“Yeah, I know,” he murmurs. “But if it helps, Logan was in charge of looking after Jax for only one night before he came knocking at my door and dumped us with Jax, so now he’s moved in temporarily too.”

“What?” I laugh. “How did he pull that shit with your mom?”

“Oh, he didn’t,” Tanner says. “Mom’s always been able to see through the twins’ shit, but for some reason, she has a soft spot for them. All Logan had to do was hit her with the puppy-dog-eyes. He fed her some bullshit about not being responsible enough for such a big job. Pretty sure the fucker even pinched himself just to put a tear in his eye. My mom has never caved so fast.”

“Ahhh, so that’s where you get it from,” I tease.

Tanner rolls his eyes, but as he watches me, his brows furrow, making me hate just how easily he can see through my bullshit. “What’s wrong?” he questions, those dark eyes gazing into mine as he sits forward, concern marring his face.

“Nothing,” I murmur. “I’m just … done. I want to get out of here and start moving on, but every day is always the same, and since Jax and Addie left, it’s just been worse. I feel like I’m trapped here with nothing but my thoughts. I mean, if I don’t get discharged today, be prepared to break me out of here.”

A grin pulls at the corner of Tanner’s lips, and he leans nice and close, so fucking close that his lips brush over mine as he speaks. “Then take a dump, babe. It’s that fucking easy. I swear, I’ll wear noise canceling headphones if it’ll help.”
