“We did,” Ducky beamed, pushing open his back door, but stopping short of leaving the backseat. He stuck his head around Dallas’s seat. His smile showed him to be as happy as Donny. “Mom’s gonna be proud of us.”

The tension coiling in Dallas’s heart didn’t unwind but thinking of his mother’s joy helped. He suspected she’d want to reward them with a good home-cooked meal of fried chicken and real mashed potatoes. Dallas finally pushed open the door and forced himself to chill. They were a signature away from their dreams coming true. It had to count for something.

Chapter 14

Greer trotted up the center stairs of his office, feeling lighter than he had in years. Even Kailey’s high heel shoes clicking on the steps behind him didn’t bother him. “Greer, slow down and stop avoiding me.”

He winked at one of his team members who particularly enjoyed his and his sister’s never-give relationship and picked up his steps as he made his way to the office. The good mood handed to him this morning on a silver platter had lasted for several hours now. He needed to find a way to keep this new attitude. His annoying, needy dick sure seemed to home in on its true desire by way of an extraordinary man, who wore a suit like he wore his athletic wear: perfectly.

If he could somehow work Dallas with grace and precision, then maybe those perfect lips would eventually be wrapped around the solid erection in his slacks. Inside his home, in his bed, with Dallas’s clothes hanging in his closet.

Yeah, that was rushing things, but it didn’t freak him out at all.

Several steps ahead of his sister, Greer felt reasonably sure the door wouldn’t hit her when he sent it flying shut. Greer clapped his hands, rubbing them together, eager to finish his day. He stood in the middle of his office, watching the monitors mounted on the wall, catching up with the highs and lows of the stock market so far today.

“I don’t know why I put up with you,” she said, busting through his office door.

“Me neither,” he answered, reaching for the remote control on his desk. He turned the volume up a couple of notches, never looking at his sister. “What do you want?”

“Skye told me, and I’m not supposed to say anything.” Kailey’s cryptic statement gained his full attention. She had her arms crossed smugly over her chest as if she held all the secrets in the world. Greer narrowed his eyes at her, taking in her whole look. She tapped her foot against the floor impatiently drawing his eyes down to her ridiculously high, high-heeled shoes. No wonder she struggled to catch up with him today.

She could be lying, pretending to know more than she did just to get whatever information she thought Greer should share with her.

“What’re you talking about?” he asked a second or two later, trying for indifference, but certain his keen sister had caught his pause. Greer turned back to the monitors, pretending to ignore her altogether.

“I suspected it was the tall one. Then I knew for certain the minute you walked in.”

His steely eyed gaze snapped to his sister. She threatened to ruin the only good mood he’d had in months, maybe longer. “You need to stay out of it.”

“Greer, tell me.” Kailey stomped her foot, turning whiney, giving up her coy game. “I want to know. If you don’t tell me now, I’ll just bother you all day and night until you do.”

“Why night?” he asked, confused in the way she posed her threat.

“We have the Groundwork Dallas Gala tonight. You’re a speaker. Remember?”

“No, I’m not,” he said, racking his brain. The mental schedule in his head had no recollection of the event tonight, but Kailey was never wrong about these things. Greer tossed the remote on his desk and reached for his office chair. He had his keyboard in front of him before his ass hit the seat. “Do I have a prepared speech?”

“I want to know about this guy. I think it’s more serious than you’re saying. You never forget these events,” Kailey said, her voice softer as she came to the front of his desk.

“Kailey, there’s nothing to know. He thinks he’s straight,” Greer said distractedly as his calendar filled the screen.

“But you don’t think so,” she surmised correctly. He saw the dinner listed in his day’s activities. Damn, the good vibe holding him together took a slight hit. “Neither do I.” His jaw tightened and he swallowed hard.

In a rare moment of honesty between the two, Greer lifted his gaze to his sister. “You caught that?”

“Of course, I did, and he didn’t want to look at you either,” she stated proudly.

He agreed those were all signs in his favor, but he had to stop Kailey from going into matchmaker mode. She’d make the whole deal a disaster.
