“The perks of being a witch,” Valefar comments.

We tend to know when we’re pregnant, and John will know the minute he can hear a second heartbeat.

“You want an elixir,” Valefar states.

“Nope, no way. Speak to John first,” I tell her as tears run down her cheeks.

“Viper is almost at the castle. You know as well as I do that he’s powerful enough to get in. Do you really think he will let you live? Only the person with ultimate power holds the throne, and you are that person.”

“So you’re saying you don’t want a baby because of me?” I ask, my hand raising to my chest as I step back, horrified at the thought.

She shakes her head. “No, I want to protect you, and I can’t do that if I’m fat!” she screams.

Valefar laughs at her outburst.

“John!” I shout as loudly as I can, calling him to our side.

Valefar disappears, leaving Tatiana and me.

“Why did you do that?”

“Because you'll make an excellent mother. Don’t let me stop you. That’s not something I would ever want on my conscience.”

John runs over, his hands gliding over Tatiana to check for injuries before he glances at me. “What happened?” he asks, then starts sniffing the air. “A demon was here.”

Shit! I forgot how good his sense of smell is.

“Tatiana wants to talk to you. I’m just going to…” I start to back away, when Grim appears again, directly in my path this time. He reaches out and captures me, holding me to him before we disappear.

I know where we are as soon as we reappear.

Our place.

Everything is so pristine. I step away from his grip and walk to the water, the same water we fucked in. Where I realized we could never be. How much I want us to be eats me alive every day.

“Why am I here?” I ask. When I turn back, those silver eyes are locked on me. “Grim?”

“You are here because I want you here.”

“And why is that?” I push a little more. When he doesn’t answer, I start to remove my clothes. The sun is setting, and the weather is warm. When I’m down to my panties with my back still to him, I slide them down incredibly slow, bending over just to taunt him. I can feel his stare penetrating through me. Standing, I glance back at him over my shoulder. His face is strained, and his lips are pressed in a thin line as I continue toward the water.

“The last woman I took died with a man’s head between her legs.” He looks at me, confused. I pause as my feet hit the cold water. “Do you enjoy that? Having a man between your legs? She did. Is this something a woman wants?” he asks.

“I’ve never had one there,” I answer truthfully. “I’ve had sex. But foreplay…” I shake my head.

“Foreplay?” he asks.

“Yes. Like how I gripped your cock and stroked it before you went inside of me. You know… foreplay.”

“And women like this… stroking?” he asks.

“I heard it’s amazing with a tongue.” I shrug before submerging myself in the water, then return to the surface and shake my head. “I may very well try it soon.” I lie back in the water and float, enjoying the calming sensation. He says something, but I don’t hear him, as my ears are in the water.

Then, before I know it, hands grip me, and I’m lifted before being carried to the sand, where Grim lays me down on his shirt.

“Grim?” I say his name, waiting for an answer. I lift up and touch his face, his eyes locking onto mine, and I lean in. “Kiss me, please.”

“We should be going. We’ve done well. This can’t happen.”

I quickly get to my knees and reach for him anyway, slamming my lips to his. He doesn’t kiss me back at first, just lets my lips move over his until I go to pull away. Then he grips me and slides his tongue between my lips.

Ecstasy.

There is no other word.

I don’t think in this lifetime I will ever experience a kiss like ours, a touch like we share, or anything remotely like what we have.

I can only hope I do, because I know we’ll never be.

He is the Angel of Death.

And I am a witch.

The two don’t work.

The two can't work.

And it is devastating.

Yet we keep lying to ourselves, as we are right now.

Held tight in his embrace, his hands slide to my bare ass, gripping my flesh with strength that makes me moan. As his tongue caresses mine, he pushes me back, but holds me so I don’t fall. I lie beneath him as he hovers above me, our lips meeting again. But then he’s pulling away much too suddenly, breaking our kiss before I get my fill.

“We have to stop meeting like this.” Grim freezes, and I smile. “Talia, Viper is requesting a meeting with you.” I turn my head and see Bronik looming behind us.
