Grant was tempted to call this in to Dylan, but he had a horrible feeling the sheriff would end up dead, and he kind of liked the old guy. Sure, he was pissed off for getting thrown in the cells for a day, but he was just doing his job.

For the most part, Dylan left the club to deal with business. They had a joint goal in mind—to protect the town of Carnage, as well as its residents.

Grant touched Wanda’s collar and urged her around the back.

The men were already dragging the woman into the trailer and within seconds it was burning. With his cell phone out once again, he took a picture of the man, and then waited. Grant kept to the shadows, not allowing his presence to be known.

“Little shits like you get on my fucking nerves. Always crouching down like the cowards you are. Thinking you know shit when you know nothing. But I’m going to teach you.”

Grant pulled out of the memory.

The shit his father would say and do was enough to mess with any kid’s mind. His father had started at a young age. Scaring him, then beating him for pissing himself. As far as his father was concerned, all he was trying to do was make a man out of his youngest son.

“You’re nothing. Bull will be fucking king and then when he realizes what a piece of shit you are, you’ll be six feet under.”

He was always saying that shit. Always telling him he wouldn’t be good enough for Bull. How his brother would end his life.

Grant waited, holding onto Wanda so she didn’t expose them. His girl seemed to know there was danger. He would fucking kill them if they hurt his dog.

He waited. Patiently waited.

And then, they climbed into a big black truck with blacked-out windows and took off. Grant didn’t move. This was one of those times he knew he had no choice but to stay down or risk getting caught. He’d made this mistake himself, once before with his father. Hiding so he didn’t know he’d snuck into the club and headed to the basement.

The basement had been the only place that was off limits to the boys of the Prez. Grant had watched Bull go down to the basement and he’d seen every single member of the club go down as well. Most of the time, they came back up laughing at something, so Grant had figured there was something fun down there. Seeing as his father was already a bastard to him, he figured his dad just didn’t want him to have any fun.

It wasn’t that.

No, it had been where the Chaos and Carnage MC had taken their enemies. Grant had watched them torture a man until he was close to death. His dad must have known he was there, because he pretended to leave, and Grant attempted to make his escape, only he’d been there, waiting. That day, his father had said it was time for him to become a man.

At ten years old, Grant had never told another living soul. This had stayed between him and his old man, but that day he’d ended another man’s life. He wasn’t allowed to leave the basement, and even though he’d been scared and terrified, he had held that knife and at his father’s enraged instruction, he’d slit the guy’s throat.

Later that week, his dad had informed him that he’d killed an innocent man, and from that day forward, he had to do whatever his dad told him. Otherwise, he’d hand his son over to the cops. The memory was so clear. Even though that was over twenty years ago, Grant recalled the fear.

Every time he picked him up from school, Grant had to wonder if his dad had told anyone. The fear had eaten him up, threatened to kill him with it, and then, when he couldn’t stand it any longer, he’d found it easier to be mean—to hurt Maddie, to be cruel to everyone around him.

Some kids had gravitated toward him. They liked to think he’d been cool. The truth was, Grant had needed to survive.

His own father had fucked with his head. Messed him up. And now it was up to him to get himself out of the shit.

Minutes passed, maybe even hours, before he got to his feet and started to head toward the garage. That was where his brother would be. He still had to keep functioning, even if he had his woman in lockdown.

Grant thought about Aria. She was safe for now. He had to protect her.

Rather than think about what he’d just seen, he thought about last night, feeling her pussy against his palm. She’d been so tense as he touched her. He couldn’t believe no one else had touched her. No one had taken the time to explore her precious body. She was untouched and he couldn’t believe how fucking aroused he was at that knowledge. Aria was all his. And he wanted to give her the fucking world.
