Then I stood by the window to watch him leave, spotting him crossing the street.

He looked up at me, and I threw up my middle finger.

He returned the gesture.

“Hey asshole!” A truck driver yelled at him. “Get the hell out of the street!”

William shot one last parting look in my direction and walked away, disappearing into the city, out of my life.

Tap! Tap! Tap!

I tapped on Dillon’s tinted window.

“Dillon?” I tapped again. “Dillon. Open the damn door.”

He sat upright in his seat, looking disoriented. Then he looked over at me and quickly unlocked the doors.

“Thank you.” I slid onto the passenger seat.

“Where’s your rental car?”

“I’m not sure,” I said. “It’s not in the alley where I left it.”

“Well, perhaps you’re still high from last night’s weed binge and forgot. I’m more than happy to send the guards to find it.”

“It’s been stolen,” I said. “The renter’s manual was the only thing left of it on the street.”

“Well, that’s quite unfortunate.” He looked torn between laughing and raging. “What about the gorgeous woman you were with? Is she the one who stole it?”

“No, and I don’t know what gorgeous woman you’re talking about.”

“The one who left those red marks and scratches all over your neck.”

“It’s not ringing a bell.” I turned up my collar to conceal them. “Then again, she’s a psychopath and we don’t need to discuss her ever again.”

“Noted.” He nodded. “You’ve got about ten hours before we have to head back to London. Where else would you like to go?”

“I need you to drive by Rogue Publishing one more time.”

“Why? You’re returning to work there permanently in a few weeks.”

“I need something to distract me from last night.”

“As you wish.”

He drove off, and I realized my watch wasn’t on my wrist. Chloe still had it as “collateral.”

Fuck.

I made a mental note to bring that up later and spotted a thin strip of paper sticking out of my trouser pocket. I tugged on it until it gave.

It was our photo booth reel from The Great Wheel.

In every frame, Chloe was pressed flush against my chest, the top of her cleavage exposed to the chilly night air. Her puffy pink lips were wide open mid-laugh, and her dark brown curls twisted between my fingers.

As tempted as I was to rip evidence of our evening to shreds, I tucked it into my blazer to keep.

Temporarily, of course.

You Tried It

I woke up in the middle of the night, fingers buried deep between my thighs with incessant thoughts of William.

Not a single day had passed when he wasn’t dominating my fantasies, when he wasn’t compelling me to download a brand-new audiobook with a British narrator to get a taste of a deep and sexy voice.

Why did I kick him out like that?

Tossing off the covers, I jumped out of bed and turned over my paper wastebasket.

I picked up every shredded piece of William’s post-it and spent over an hour putting it together.

When all the digits were in order, I dialed the number in my phone, but then I stopped.

He’d never returned to retrieve his watch—never even sent for it—and I knew (after unsuccessfully trying to pawn it) that it was worth coming back for.

Calling him for another round of sex was pointless.

He’s not interested in you, Chloe.

I shredded the post-it again and returned to bed.

You Really Tried It

The only part of the palace that was off-limits to both tourists and the press was my mother’s former library.

It was where I kept every letter she’d ever written to me and a catalogue of all our shared moments on video.

Since the press once reported on my copy of In Cold Blood with headlines like “Prince Carrington Wants His Family Killed,” and “Prince Carrington is Obsessed with Murder,” I kept my entire book collection in this room, too.

This was also the perfect spot to finish penning my “farewell to this shit” letter, but I’d written four sentences to date.

Every time I sat down to complete it, my father summoned me for a photo opp, or worse, a “surprise” tea date with Victoria. In perfect view of the media.

I’d seen her twice this week, and each visit only confirmed that she and I lived on two completely different planets.

The only thing I could honestly focus on was my time with Chloe.

It wasn’t just the memory of her loud screams as I devoured her between the sheets, the marks she left on my skin while I was inside her, or the fact that she was the best sex I’d ever had. It was our entire night, her complete honesty, and her sarcasm served with a sexy smile.

I’d chalked up her morning “get out of my place” episode to an unfortunate, psychotic break, because I knew from the look in her eyes that she wanted a repeat as much as I did.
