Hunter

Shit, I am not with this shit. We just pulled up to the house and already I’m having second and third thoughts. I don’t want her to face him after all. Let all the harsh words fall on my head.

But for some reason, this one is all of a sudden in an all fired hurry to face the man she’s feared her whole damn life. “Wait your ass right there. And once we get in there don’t you leave my sight.”

“Good grief Hunter, what do you think my daddy’s going to do to me?” We soon found out. Like a sap I let her talk me into letting her go to his home office alone while I told my mom the news in the kitchen.

“I can’t say that I’m surprised. I knew there was a reason behind all those questions when she was still here and you were away at college. And then after she joined you there, I always found it strange that her room never seemed lived in when we came to visit.”

My face was red as hell, caught by my own mother. “So you knew?” I guess I haven’t been fooling her all these years after all. “If you knew…”

“I suspected son, there’s a difference. You have my blessing, but I can’t say the same for her dad. You know he has all these plans for her already and this is just going to set him off. He hates for anyone to go against him.”

She wasn’t telling me anything I didn’t know about him. “What about you, will this cause problems with you and him?”

“I doubt it, but if it does, that’s not for you to worry about. I will never sacrifice your happiness for mine.”

“I don’t want to put you in a tough position either. That’s one of the reasons I allowed her to keep us a secret, I never wanted to make things difficult for you.”

“My precious boy.” She did that cupping my cheek shit like I was five. Though no five-year old worth his salt would allow that shit these days. My kid sure the fuck will or it’ll be his ass.

Just then we heard raised voices coming from down the hall. I jumped to my feet and rushed out of the kitchen with my heart in my lungs. Didn’t I tell her this shit was gonna happen.

I pushed open the door just in time to see him raise his hand to hit her. “Hey, the fuck are you doing?” I moved across the room and pushed her behind me. She was already crying and the look in her eyes … I guess she wasn’t expecting him to react this strongly.

“Are you okay baby?”

“And you, how dare you put your filthy hands on my daughter? I trusted you…”

“Filthy, what makes my hands filthier than yours?”

“You’re not for her, I want better for her. Do you know what you’ve done? Ian Smithson comes from a prominent upstanding family….”

“And you need his family’s money to bail you out.”

“How did you…?”

“How did I know? I went digging after I couldn’t figure out why you were in an all fired rush to marry her off. Sell her off more like it.”

“Daddy is that true?” Fuck, I forgot I hadn’t told her, didn’t want her to know that shit.

“Of course not. I would never….”

“It’s true alright, and his family needs him to marry someone of breeding to hide the fact that he’s a fuck up who’s into things he ought not to be.”

Nasty fuck thought he was good enough to my woman. And her asshat of a dad has no idea what he was about to marry her off to.

She looked from me to him and back with a look on her face like she had to throw up. “Daddy?”

“Who’re you going to believe, me or him?” I was never prouder than when she took my hand and stood closer to me. I guess no words were needed and for the first time I felt like the winner.

The door opened behind us and mom walked in. “You kids go on home, I need to talk to my husband about why he thinks my son is filth. Hunter, make up the spare bedroom, I might need it.”

“You’re not going anywhere. You know I don’t think the boy is filth, I just…she’s my little girl.”

“Yes I know; we’ll talk about it. You two go on now.” What the hell was that tone he was using just now? Mom rules the nest? What the fuck? These fucking women!

She was a sullen mess on the way home after I helped her pack up some of her stuff. When we left, the parents were still shut up in the office and I don’t want to know what the fuck they were doing in there.

I took her hand as we drove but left her to her own thoughts. As long as she was next to me, I didn’t care about shit else, everything else will work itself out.
