But swear to fuck I opened my mouth and shit refused to leave. I’d worded the shit ten times between the airstrip and here in the car. I cleared my throat while he just sat there watching me.
“Is this about you and Lara?” What the fuck?
“You know about that?”
“Of course I know. When have you kids ever been able to keep shit from me?”
“You know, what do you mean you know?” I was beginning to get light headed. This shit was not going anyway like I’d expected. “Pop, what do you mean?” He took his time clipping his cigar before lighting the end.
Just like I know hers, I know his damn tells. He was about to zing me. I braced for whatever fuckery was about to come out of his mouth. You see, part of being the only one he can trust on this earth, is being the only one he shows his soft side to. He may love his wife and step-kid, but I’m the only one on earth who can get beneath his defenses.
That’s why I hadn’t been too worried about his reaction. Now I’m worried as fuck because this crazy old man just told me he knew. But what exactly does he know I wonder.
“That girl’s been in love with you for a while now. I knew and so did her mother, you on the other hand was clueless. That’s why we started telling you about getting married.” He grinned around his cigar with his ‘got you’ face and I waited for his shit.
“But when you came up with the convent I didn’t know what the hell to think. I knew you were up to something, I just didn’t know what. You lost your detail that day, the one you know about. But I have my ways of keeping you safe…” I started to say something but he cut me off.
“Before this turns into a screaming match I have a headache. The doctor says I can’t have any stress.” This fucker and his headaches. He trots those shits out whenever he wants to get out of something.
“Anyway, as I was saying. The guy I have on you followed you. By the way, your pilot is good people. I couldn’t get shit out of him. But my guy told me she showed up there at your place in the country.”
“Pop, you got people watching my house?” My mind went straight to yesterday at the pool. I’ll fucking kill the fuck.
“Don’t worry, I pulled them out when I realized what you were up to. I figured you weren’t going anywhere for a while. Is she there alone now? I should call….”
“Do you think I’d leave her alone? Am I new? Pop you set me up?”
“I didn’t do shit, we were just planting seeds her mother and I, who knew you would take this route? I made a donation to the convent in your mother’s name by the way.”
“I did too. Those fucks made out like larks. Forget that, what the hell did you do?”
“Like I said, we didn’t do anything that was all you two. I just watched and listened. I knew after the bathroom incident that you were going to do something.”
“You knew about that too.”
“Son, there are eyes all over this house you know that. Especially Lara’s rooms, have more damn security than the Smithsonian. I saw you standing outside her door and turned on audio and got an earful. You couldn’t lock the damn bathroom door?”
“She picked the fucking lock pop.” He thought that shit was funny. And I was sitting there wondering what the fuck else he knew. First order of business, sniff out his crew and get them the hell off my ass.
Then again, maybe that’s a good thing. Extra security for her while I try to clean up the mess left by my ancestors. Going legit had never felt so good. Now I’m gonna start a family, it was perfect timing.
I pulled up to the house still not sure what the hell happened back in that study. The only thing pop didn’t have eyes and ears on, was the goings on in my house this last week.
“Lara where are you?” When she didn’t answer my first response was to panic. Then I remembered that she was safe. I have her more protected than even pops did. So I went searching for her.
I found her in our bed out cold, wrapped around my pillow. That shit started acting up in my heart as I stood next to the bed looking down at her. Her face had lost the cloudiness of the past few days. She looked…peaceful.
Was loving someone that life altering? Just a few words could mean so much? As I thought it I reminded myself that I had yet to show her all of my heart. I don’t have a problem saying the words any longer, not to her.
