“Aren’t you afraid that I’d say something after the wedding? I mean he can just as well divorce you…” I didn’t expect her to reach out and grab my hand so hard that she almost snapped my wrist.

“You better hope not you little bitch. You mess this up for me and you’ll really get it. Besides, what can you say anyway? You know nothing.” Her face was a cruel mask.

“Ouch, you’re hurting me.” I tried getting my arm away from her with no luck. She only let go when she was ready to. She flung my hand back at me hard and stalked away.

I felt some relief that I’d gotten that admission on record, since I’d hit the record button as soon as she walked in. But now I was afraid of her mental state. She seemed to be unraveling fast.

I stood just outside the door listening and had to fold my fists and hold my breath not to walk in and put myself between the two of them when I heard the harsh whispers. I couldn’t make out what was being said, but I knew it was nothing good.

When she’d cried out that had been it for me though, but by the time I got into the room Lisa was gone and Elaina was standing there holding her wrist with tears in her eyes.

“Let me see.” She jumped at my voice and I felt that slight tearing in my heart. I took her injured hand in mine and barely bit back the rage I felt at the sight of what the bitch had done to her arm again.

“No don’t.” She pulled me back with a hand on my sleeve when I made to go after her mother. “Fine, I’ll leave it for now. Where’s the old man?” She pointed to the study.

“I’ll be right back. I left something in the office upstairs.” I made as if to head there now, but once upstairs and after making sure the coast was clear, I made a detour.

I was in and out in five minutes flat and after grabbing the papers from the office headed back down. I saw the hag looming over dad in the study when I walked in. “Excuse us please.”

It was obvious that she wasn’t happy with my request. “Oh come now, why do you always rush me out of the room whenever you’re here? Am I really that bad?”

“You can go, my son wants to talk to me.”

Say what? What the hell was that? Her look of surprise must’ve matched mine but I didn’t let mine show. I waited for her to leave the room and now my mind was going off to random places.

Did he seem different?

“How are you feeling dad?” I don’t know how I knew but I sensed her presence outside the door. Me, being the subtle being that I am walked over and looked at her as she lingered in the hallway before closing the door. I almost laughed at the look on her face.

“I don’t think I’ve been well these last few days, but today for some reason I’ve been feeling better. A little forgetful, but better.” Okay now he’s really making me think there might be something to mom and Elaina’s suspicions.

Luke

I stayed with him for a little while, but the longer I stayed there the more confused I became. There was definitely something going on. He wasn’t my old dad from before the affair, but he wasn’t the man who’d had that affair either.

From some of the things he said it was almost as if he was missing time. Now I had a new guilt on my conscience. I’d given up on him so easily. It never once entered my mind that he could be in danger. Now I have three people being victimized by this bitch.

I wasn’t sure what I was going to do until I came down the stairs and saw her looking out the window with a look of such sadness on her face I could almost feel it. I’m guessing I’m always going to feel that rush of tenderness every time she’s near.

“Go up to your room.” I’d moved up behind her so silently she almost flew out of her skin at my whispered words. I liked the fact that she didn’t question me, just turned and headed up the stairs to her room.

I walked around outside, which had gone full dark and contemplated moving my car to a more hidden place. But in the end I thought better of it. My old room was always made up, and though I have no plans on sleeping there tonight, I can always use it as an excuse if I’m caught.

I walked up the steps to the balcony and knocked lightly on the door. She slid the glass doors open and stepped back to let me in. I guess it was providence that I showed up when I did, because no sooner had I than we heard footsteps outside her door.
