He’d bravely told the teacher that he wasn’t his dad and when asshole tried convincing them that he lived with him the kid insisted they call his mom.

“You did good son, I’m proud of you. If you ever see him again I want you to find an adult and call me or your mom right away.”

He was still shook and clung to me in fear. This old man is trying to get me sent back to jail. I was already suspecting from his actions with my woman that he had something to do with my misfortune, but that was going to take time to prove. For now I had other business with that fat fuck.

It was obvious he wants to start shit with me, going after my kid like that. There’s no way I’m going back to where I just escaped from, but he had to be shut the fuck down.

I grabbed my glock and checked it and pushed it in the back of my jeans before grabbing my knife and shoving it in my boot. My face was set in stone as I got ready to head out the door.

Whatever civility I had was checked at the prison doors the day they closed behind me, locking me in. Fuck that. I’d already done the time, I have no worries about doing the crime.

I heard her on the phone again and took a wild guess as to who she was calling. I was back to being pissed at her, who knows why.

I guess that’s something else that’s gonna take

time. It was fucked thinking, but I can’t help it. He was in our lives because of her.

My mind was stuck on whatever the fuck she’d done to give this asshole the impression that he had a right to my son. If he was this fucking bold now, I can only imagine what he was like when I was inside.

“Kane, what are you gonna do?” She followed me around the bedroom.

“You don’t talk. I’ll deal with you when I get back.” I barely spared her a glance. She’s lucky I still know how to rein it in where she’s concerned.

My phone rang and it was Craig telling me to stay put that he was on his way. Then in quick succession all my boys called to tell me the same.

I went to the bedroom where I’d sent my son because I didn’t want him exposed to one of my moods. “Hey son, daddy’s gotta make a run, I’ll be right back.”

My boy climbed down off his bed and came over to me. His little arms going around my waist and his head on my chest helped ease some of the raw edges.

I fought back the tears that were ever present whenever I looked at my seed. Of everything I hated the system for, robbing me of his childhood was the front runner. That and losing his mother for all those years.

“Okay dad.” He pulled his head back and smiled up at me with my face. I ruffled his hair and kissed the top of his head before leaving the room.

His mother was still standing where I’d left her. She looked at me pleadingly, and though my love for her had never wavered, I was too mad to reassure her right now.

I jogged down the stairs to the outside. First chance I get, I’m getting my family outta this apartment complex. It wasn’t secure enough to suit me.

It was the best I could do on short notice seeing as how I’d just left lockup. With the money I’d won I can afford a much nicer place for my son and woman, something I’ll be sure to take care of as soon as possible.

My boys were already pulling up outside. I guess they were coming with to make sure I didn’t kill his punk ass, which wasn’t far off the mark.

I was running on adrenaline and trying to tell myself to stay calm. If I went up again my kid and his mom would be left out here on their own. Something I couldn’t fucking fathom.

One by one my boys tried talking me down. No one wanted to see me go back in, so Michelle had called them and they’d come running. That’s learned behavior, something she’d done in the past.

They knew better than to try and stop me, and after I told them what my beef was, none of them wanted to anyway. You don’t fuck with a man’s kid.

Chapter 8

My boys left off trying to talk me down and mounted up. “Let’s ride out boys.” Just like old times we fired up the Harleys and lit out for the edge of town.

It was the middle of the day so I headed for his practice first and he wasn’t there, so we headed to his gated home with the high walls. Those shits were no deterrent for me.
