As I drift off and the world fades, my last thought is that I might not even mind.

CRASH

“Devil, you in there?” I bang on the door. “Jesus, that fucker could sleep through a nuclear war.”

Preacher laughs. “He could, no doubt.”

“Devil!” At some point, he's got to wake up. Ideally, before motel security shows up to find out what the hell's going on.

“Just a moment! Jesus!” Devil's voice is muffled by the door, but at least he's awake. I shake my head at Preacher, who grins back at me.

“He's probably got someone in there. His bike was out last night. I thought the same about you. Where the fuck were you, anyway? You weren't answering your phone.”

“I left it in this fucker's room, and I just needed to get some air, you know? These past few days have been a lot.”

Preacher nods, watching me with those too observant eyes. “You holding up all right?”

“I didn't snort, smoke or stab myself with something, if that's what you're asking. I'm fine, man.”

“Whatever you need, you fucking ask for it. Got me?” He slaps his hand on my arm and squeezes until I look at him. “Got me?”

“Yeah, I got you.”

He slams his fist into the door. “Come on, Romeo.”

It cracks open just far enough to let us in. “You fuckers need to chill.” Devil's in nothing but a pair of jeans and there's definitely someone in there with him, so maybe Preacher's right.

“Hey, I think I left my phone here yesterday and—”

That's as far as I get, because the person in the bed sits up and lets out a scream.

Holy fuck.

Summer's in his bed clutching the sheets to her neck to cover her tits, and it feels like getting punched in the nuts. I have Devil slammed up against the wall before I even have time to process how fucking gorgeous she is.

“WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU DO?” I yell in his face.

“Jacob! Jacob, stop!” she screams, but it's Preacher that pulls me off him.

Devil runs a hand through his hair and has the decency to look a little guilty. Not much, though. “Jesus, good morning to you too, bro.”

“Summer?”

Her face is beat red, and she looks like she wants to sink under the covers and hide. “Jac—Crash,” she corrects herself. If she continues, I don't hear it, because all I can see is her breasts pressing against the sheet and her nipples beneath the cheap cotton.

My feelings are all over the place. This doesn't line up with what I know about Summer. It's that more than anything else that makes me want to drag Devil out into the street and wipe that fucking smirk off his face. I trust that asshole with my life, and my cock doesn't mind the idea of sharing Summer with my brothers, but it's Summer. If I find out he took advantage of her innocence…

“Did you fuck her?” My question comes out in a low growl.

“What?” Summer twists so fast the sheets move and I catch the sight of her naked profile, the graceful curve of her body and…

Jesus Christ. I've got no claim to her. I've fucked my way through more than my share of women, but this girl put her kitten claws in me young. Apparently, they've just been waiting for the right moment to tear my fucking heart out.

“No! Devil didn't fu… We didn't do that!”

Devil laughs. “You let him off too easy, honey. Nah, man, but if you need to get pissed about something, how about you ask yourself where the fuck you were when she was calling you for help last night.”

“What?”

“Yeah, you don't get to be all fucking pissy about me shooting my shot after you said you weren't interested. She needed help, and I was here to give it. Did you want me to fucking ignore her? Here.” He throws my phone at me.

I snag it out of the air, then tap into the call log. What the fuck? “You should've come get me.”

“You weren't fucking here! Was I supposed to send up the bat signal?” He shakes his head as he digs through his saddlebag for a T-shirt. “Or maybe I should've left her there with that miserable excuse for a man pretending to be a father.”

“Someone tell me what's going on before I fucking lose it.”

“I tried to call you,” Summer says miserably. “I didn't know what else to do, and Devil, he came to get me.”

“Why did he need to do that, angel?” Preacher asks softly.

“Dad wanted to hold a memorial dinner for your mom.” She looks at me with a sad little smile. “It seemed weird that he was making a big deal about it, but I stopped asking him questions years ago. I thought, well, I guess I thought he wanted me to take on some of Vivian's responsibilities because he asked for me to be styled more mature than usual. But then we got there and—” She shudders, her gorgeous fucking shoulders shaking.
