“Hudson,” I breathe as I push my fingers under my shorts and panties to seek my clit. “Why do you have to talk so dirty? Now my clit is throbbing. That was mean.”

His chuckles turn me on. “You miss my tongue, heathen?”

“More than anything.”

“I miss your tongue too. You’re a tease with it, but my cock loved it anyway.”

We both grow quiet, both of us panting as we touch ourselves. My orgasm teases me, but it’s much harder to do it on my own. He knows exactly how to touch me to make it happen so quickly.

“Fuck, baby, I miss you so goddamned much already. This is torture,” he hisses.

Tears burn at my eyes. “I miss you too.” My fingers fumble at my clit, but it’s no use. It’s not the same. He grunts and then lets out a ragged sigh as he comes. The sounds coming from him lack their usual passion.

“It’s no comparison to the real thing,” he utters.

“What the fuck, man? Coach cancels practice and you have phone sex with your girlfriend? Hi, Amy,” his friend Nick says in the background.

A spike of jealousy flits through me, but it’s better for him to think that way. Hudson plays along with it.

“One day, when you find the girl of your dreams, you’ll understand,” Hudson grumbles at him.

“I was going to ask you if you wanted to go out tonight, but it looks like you have your hands full. Literally. I’ll leave you and Amy alone.”

“Knock next time, asshole,” Hudson says with a laugh seconds before the door slams in the background. “Sorry about that. You didn’t come.”

I slide my hand out of my shorts. “I will when I see you next. Only you can make me come so hard I see stars. I’m not as good at it as you.”

“Have you thought about where you want to go on vacation?” he asks.

I roll over on my side and stare at the picture of the four of us on our last vacation. We went on our annual trip to Lake of the Ozarks. Mom and I are both wearing big sunglasses and even bigger hats. Dad and Hudson wear matching grins as they hold up their fish they’d caught. It’s one of my most favorite places. “To our usual cabin.”

“I figured you’d say that. A couple more weeks and we’ll get to spend all the time in the world together.”

Hudson

Coach doesn’t look up from his computer when I enter his office. His jaw is clenched and he seems tired.

“Sit,” he instructs as he swivels in his chair and regards me with a frown.

My stomach hollows out. I can’t get it out of my head the time he called me in here to tell me my parents were gone. It replays over and over again in my head.

“What’s up?” I ask as I drop heavily into the chair across from him.

“We both know you’ve played like shit,” he says bluntly but not cruelly.

“Yeah,” I agree. Especially this week at practice. It’s been four days since I left Rylie to come back to school and each day becomes more torturous than the last.

“I’m going to be frank here, Hale,” he says with a huff. “Paulson has been picking up the slack and a good fit for third base. He’s focused and doesn’t make stupid mistakes.”

I can’t even argue. I’ve missed balls I’d usually catch and can’t hit the ball to save my life. Worst part is, I don’t even care. It’s as though I’m going through the motions just to pass time.

“Are you kicking me off the team?” I ask, my voice tight.

He pushes an envelope across the desk. “Inside, there’s a letter of recommendation and a check from my wife. She appreciates all you’ve done for her firm, but she needs someone more reliable working there. Just like I need someone on the team I can count on.”

I blink at him in shock. “You’re kicking me off the team and firing me?”

His throat bobs as he swallows. “You’re not playing anymore this season. I’ve written you up and you’re on watch since your scholarship rides on you playing ball for me. I’m not kicking you off because I know you need this scholarship to go to school. But come the end of summer, you have to try out again. If you’re not back to being the Hudson I know, you’ll force my hand. I’m sorry. I’d hoped you’d take your finals next week and then go home for the summer. Maybe see someone professionally so you can work through your blinding grief. Then, come back in the fall so we can get your head back in the game. You’re one of this school’s best players and I hate to see you decline so quickly like this.”

I keep waiting for the horror to wash over me. Nothing comes. The fact I feel nothing, surprises me. “I’m sorry I disappointed you,” I say, my voice husky as I rise from my seat. “I’m going to find myself this summer.” It’s a long time coming. With Rylie, I’ve barely begun to scratch the surface.
