“Thanks,” Poppy murmurs, staring at the space and then turning to face me. “Do you think I’m safe out here?”

Her question throws me. “I think so, yes. Why?”

She looks a little nervous and then leans in close. “I didn’t tell you everything.”

Oh.

Shit.

“What do you mean?” I ask back, eyes wide.

“Where do you want this stuff, Poppy?” Eve asks, carrying in a giant suitcase.

“Here is fine,” Poppy answers.

“Eve shut the door,” I say quickly.

Eve glances at the two of us and then shuts the door. “God, what have you two done?”

I look at Poppy.

She exhales. “I told you about my husband and how I stole from him. Sure, he’s after me, but I don’t think it was him shooting at us.”

Wait?

What?

“What do you mean you don’t think it was him? There’s more?” I ask, eyes wide.

“Yes, there’s more. Only they’re a lot more dangerous.”

Oh.

Boy.

This is bad. I can feel it.

“Care to share?” Eve goes on.

Poppy rubs her face. “Once I left my husband, I sold some of the money I made to this guy...he said he wanted to see if it would pass and if it did, he would buy a shit load more off me. I was super pumped, so I started making more. He paid for a heap of it, and I was meant to deliver it, but...”

“But the club picked you up,” I finish for her.

She nods. “I never delivered the money after he paid, which means he’ll have a target on my back. He knows my name. I was stupid enough to give it to him. It won’t take him long to track me down. The thing is,” she squirms a little before she says her next words, “he’s part of a cartel.”

My eyes get big.

Really big.

“What?” I whisper hiss.

“I didn’t know at first,” she explains, “it was only after he paid me that I figured it out.”

“Oh, Poppy,” Eve says, shaking her head. “This is bad. We need to tell Riggs.”

“He’ll kick me out for sure. You can’t tell him,” Poppy says, her voice panicked. “If he knows the kind of mess I’m in, I’ll be done for. He won’t keep me here. If I go out there, I’m dead. That man, he won’t listen to my excuses as to why I didn’t deliver what he paid for. He’ll kill me on the spot.”

“We have to tell them,” I say. “We have no choice. They’re a club. They can protect you.”

“I know they can,” Poppy exhales. “But they won’t want to. They can’t stand me.”

“What’s goin’ on in here?”

We all spin around to see Riggs, Beckett and Adan have entered the room.

I know Poppy doesn’t want to tell them, but she has to.

They’re the only things that can protect her now.

“Poppy needs to tell you something,” Eve says before I can.

Riggs narrows his eyes. “Don’t look good...”

“It’s not,” I say carefully, then glance at Poppy. “Poppy?”

She puts her face in her hands for a moment and then exhales. “So,” she begins. “Here’s the thing...”

We all stand and listen as she explains everything to the guys.

When she’s done, their faces say it all.

Riggs looks shocked, Beckett looks pissed, and Adan looks concerned.

“What. The. Actual. Fuck.”

That was Beckett.

He throws his hands up and starts bellowing curse words, calling her a slew of names, and carrying on about how dangerous this is.

Adan says nothing.

Riggs puts his hand up, stopping Beckett.

“You give me names, you give me information, you give me anything you can about the man you are dealin’ with,” Riggs tells Poppy. “For now, you stay here and you keep makin’ money. You owe us now, especially if we help you. Big fuckin’ time.”

Poppy nods.

“Riggs?” I ask when he turns to walk out.

I can see he’s fuming.

He looks back at me.

“Is she in danger?”

His eyes swing to Poppy and he murmurs low, “More than you could fuckin’ possibly imagine.”

Oh.

This is bad.

This is very bad.

I finally found my safe place, my happily ever after, the man of my dreams.

But for Poppy, her story is only just beginning.

THE END
