“I have a feeling you’re going to.”

The warlock came and removed Lori from his side. She clearly wasn’t happy with being held back, but as he looked at her, he knew she was going to be a problem. Wolves were difficult to handle, but one in search of revenge was even harder to handle.

Annoyance flooded his body as well as anger. Brandon had reacted and removed the problem, rather than deal with it.

One of the other witches had started to pace.

He noticed they were all getting a little nervous, which he couldn’t exactly understand. There was no reason to be nervous. He didn’t know what they were waiting for. Apart from Layla. Why hadn’t they gotten to Layla?

One of the wraiths suddenly grabbed their head and began to scream. The sound was so ear-piercing it even made Alexander wince, but he wasn’t able to cover his ears.

Everyone tensed up, and he saw them looking around. Wraiths shouldn’t be affected. They were vile beings, which is what made them so valuable—their inability to die, and to wander through life and death undetected.

The wraith suddenly turned to ash. Before anyone could question it, the same happened to another. After three wraiths turned to dust, a silence descended on the group.

Who the fuck had done that? Alexander had never heard of anyone being able to take out a wraith before. They were so insignificant, they were often a waste of time.

Within seconds, the cult looked at each other, and he saw them all back away and hold up their defenses.

The two witches had their hands outstretched, as well as the warlock. All the different kinds of shifters had claws and teeth at the ready to do whatever kind of damage necessary. Tension mounted in his body.

“Who was it?” the witch who had tried to rip his heart out of his chest asked.

“It’s not us!”

“Then who is it?”

This time, another wraith was suddenly pulled from the group, screaming as it disappeared into the night. Each wraith, one by one, disappeared.

The fear mounted in the group. He could almost taste the acridness.

And then, he saw her—Layla—on the edge of the circle. Now, Alexander knew true fear, not because of his woman, but for his woman. She wore a white dress, her hair looked almost pure white as well, and there seemed to be a glow around her.

She opened her eyes, and that was where he saw the difference. Her pure blue eyes had been changed for that of black. He then saw the vines seeming to decorate her flesh as if by magic.

“You’ve been looking for me,” Layla said.

Alexander didn’t like this.

“Layla, get out of here. It’s a trap.”

The witch threw her hand his way, putting something over his mouth, stopping him from warning his woman.

He grew angry with every passing second. There was nothing he could do but watch.

The warlock shot a fireball at Layla and he saw in amazement as she reached out, capturing the fireball, making it bigger, and then launching it right at the warlock.

“My turn,” she said.

The fireball hit the warlock, sending him flying across the circle. Much to Alexander’s surprise, the circle stopped the warlock from escaping. He hit air and then collapsed onto the floor.

The two witches sent out bolts of lightening. Layla was able to capture both, and then she seemed to float in the air as if the electrical volts had charged her up, filling her with power. She threw her hands down, and bolts of lightening hit the group.

They all had to dodge away from the power.

Alexander watched in amazement as his woman showed true strength. He had no idea what had happened, but he didn’t care. His woman was strong, powerful.

“Missed me?” Brandon asked, suddenly appearing at his side. His hand turning into a giant claw.

“Why did you let her come?”

“Do you think we could stop her?”

“Her life is in danger.”

“Personally, I think anyone who took you, their life is in danger from her, not the other way around.”

The lightening stopped and Layla lowered herself to the ground.

The last of the wraiths turned to dust as Layla threw her hand out, squeezed her palm, and that seemed to turn them to dust.

Brandon had cut through one chain, but Lori appeared at their sides, jumping on her old Alpha’s back, and pulling him away from the group.

“Miss me?” Lori asked, laughing. “Trying to save a vampire. How does the mighty fall?” She tutted.

Brandon’s howl filled the air.

Alexander sensed the Alpha coming forth.

“The bitch is going to die, they’re going to kill Layla, and then, when they’re done with her, I’m going to find Elle. I’m going to make her wish for death and I’m not going to grant it. She can be my persona …”

She didn’t get to finish.

Layla must have heard her say Elle.

Lori was in one breath in a pouncing pose, ready to strike, the next, she was thrust through the air and in front of Layla.
