“Cam? Are you in here?” I called.

“I’m here. I just moved further in.”

“Okay. I’ve got some food for you.” As I rounded a corner in the cave, I saw the soft glow of the electric lantern I’d brought for him. When I reached the more secluded area where he’d settled, I was glad to see his color was better than the day before. His dark hair was ruffled like he’d been lying down. Hopefully he’d gotten some rest.

“How are you feeling?”

“Better. I spent some time in wolf form, and that helped speed the healing.” But his brittle smile faltered as he tried to use his hand to lift himself from the air mattress I’d brought him. It was clear he was still in a lot of pain.

“You’d be so much more comfortable in one of the cabins or a bedroom at the farmhouse. Dr. Catherine could take a look at your hands and make sure the cuts aren’t infected.”

“I can’t risk it. If I’m where I could be seen, then anyone from Oaklawn could find me and interrogate me about Rory again. I won’t take that chance.” Cam’s younger brother Rory was only sixteen when he’d had his first heat, but their pack leader had mated with him anyway. As soon as he had been able, Rory had escaped and was now safe with a pack in North Carolina.

I sat down next to him, placing the basket of food on the cave floor. He scooted closer as if needing comfort. I carefully lifted one of his hands and then the other, turning them over and inspecting the bandages I’d wrapped around them for signs of infection setting in. “Please tell me what happened.”

Cam sighed. “I hate even thinking about it, but you deserve to know.”

“I’m not sure about that, but I want to help you, and I can do that best if you tell me.”

“When I had my first heat, Alpha Hanson gave me to Troy.”

I winced. Troy had been a hateful asshole alpha since he’d swaggered into my kindergarten class.

“He already hated me since after three heats I still hadn’t gotten pregnant, and then when Rory left, he demanded I tell him what I knew. He decided to force me to talk by locking me in the spare bedroom and keeping my hands tied. He brought me a little water, but nothing else. I knew I had to get out of there, so I worked at the ropes until I freed myself and then I pried open a window that had been painted shut and escaped.”

“So that’s how you got the cuts on your fingers, opening the window?”

Cam nodded.

“I’m so sorry. You’re amazing, you know? I’m so glad you contacted me.”

“Me too,” he said, his voice soft. I put my arm around him and pulled him against me. Troy needed to pay for what he’d done.

“Are you sure you won’t consider reporting this? The cop I told you about, Cory, he’s Alpha Silas’s mate now. He would help you.”

“I just want to lay low until I’m healed enough to move on.” I hated how defeated he looked.

“Where will you go? I thought you didn’t want to risk joining the Swannanoa Pack with Rory?”

He took a long, slow breath. “I miss him so much, but… no, I can’t risk being followed there. When he’s eighteen and safe from being dragged back to Oaklawn, I can be near him, but not until then.”

“So where then?”

He shrugged and then winced. “Shit, that hurts. I keep forgetting how sore my arms and shoulders are. I don’t know where. Just somewhere that’s not here.”

“If you just let me talk to Alpha Silas—”

I wanted to keep pushing, but I was afraid Cam might run before he gave his body a chance to heal. At least for now he was letting me care for him.

“You said he was already mad at you. Did he hurt you before?”

“Not much. He mostly just yelled at me, and he made me get checked out by Dr. Jenkins and refused to leave the room during the exam.”

“That man’s a quack.”

“I know, but he couldn’t find anything wrong with me. I haven’t gotten pregnant because I’ve been taking herbs to prevent it.”

I frowned. “Are you sure they’re safe? Did you get them from Lana?” She was an older omega who had no formal medical training but was still a hell of a lot more knowledgeable than Dr. Jenkins.

Cam nodded. “Yes, and I know there isn’t supposed to be a very effective birth control for omegas, but they’ve worked so far.”

“Cam, I—”

“I was not going to have that asshole’s baby.”

I sighed, knowing if I were an omega, I’d have taken the risk too. “I’m just so glad you left. You deserve so much more than an alpha who would do this.”

“I do.”

“The Trillium Creek Pack will protect you. You’re of age, and you’re not pregnant, so Oaklawn has no hold on you. Alpha Silas wouldn’t let anyone from Oaklawn into our territory to question you.” So much for not pressuring him.
