10 MARRY THE WOMAN, SAVE THE WORLD

Wedding bells ring out through the enchanted forest. I proceed down the aisle in a gown of pure white, holding a bouquet of alien wildflowers. This is the day Cir promised me from almost the very moment we met. I walk between rows of trees toward my alien husband to be, marveling at all that has been and all that will be.

Captain Talos is officiating, standing underneath the greatest and most impressive purple tree. I find him hard to read, in part because of his stern and impassive expression, but moreso because I cannot take my eyes off Cir. I cannot believe this is really happening. He’s just so handsome in his suit, his iridescent gaze lighting up as he sees me coming.

My dress is ethereal silk and organza, light and flowing but with many layers, petals of fabric outlining my bust and bodice, and a smooth skirt falling to the level of the pink grass below. I am an enchanted bride, and I feel so very beautiful with my hair flowing in soft curls over my shoulders. The forest itself makes gentle music for me as I proceed toward my husband and our mutual destiny.

The ceremony is loosely based on human tradition. I reach Cir and he takes my hand in his, beginning his vows without prompting, a declaration of love and fidelity.

“I will possess this woman, have her, hold her, keep her, mate her,” Cir declares. “She will be my morning and my evening, my sun and my moon. I will orbit about her and serve her all the days of her life.”

Having made that declaration, he speaks to me directly, and I feel the warmth of his spirit wrap around me with every word.

“Jessica, I have loved you from the moment we met. Your spirit shone for me, and I felt the hand of destiny upon us. I was made for you, and I believe you were fashioned for me. You make me happy to the very core of my being, and you give me hope for my future, and that of the world we are sworn to save.”

“I love you, Cir,” I say, happy tears in my eyes. “I love you for rescuing me. I love you for accepting me. I love you for loving me when I did not think I could be loved. You have more than saved me. You have raised me up from a lost, broken soul to a creature with purpose. And you’re fucking hot.”

“I pronounce you husband and wife,” Talos says, nailing his line. “You may kiss the bride.”

Cir and I kiss in the enchanted forest, surrounded by sacred nature. I feel his love and his dedication, and I know he feels mine too. We are going to live a very happy life together, and we are going to save the world.
