We were both on the verge of going over, and I wanted to do it together. My fingers rubbed faster and harder, manipulating her clit.
“Yeah, bunny … just like that … come for me… give it to me.”
She did just that, coming down my balls.
Two more thrusts and I was right there with her. Growling from within my chest, I fucked my seed deep inside her.
Immediately knowing…
I was falling in love with her.
And what I had to do next.
Twenty-Seven
Cove
I woke up the next morning to Jace ordering, “You need to get dressed.”
He was already standing by the bedroom door, wearing his clothes.
“Good morning to you too,” I greeted, immediately picking up his tone.
In the blink of an eye, he was back to the cold and calloused man. It was like what happened between us yesterday was an illusion. For a second, I thought I imagined last night, but the soreness of my core and body proved otherwise.
“Are we going somewhere?” I asked in an anxiety-stricken state of mind.
“Yes,” he replied.
Our eyes never wavered from one another, captivated in each other’s stares.
“Is everything alright?”
“Nothing ’s ever alright.”
“Are we—”
“I'm a killer, Cove. The sooner you realize that. The easier this will be between us.”
“You mean the easier it will be on you?”
“Bunny, I know who I am. It’s you who doesn't.”
Thinking about it for a second, I rasped, “Please don’t be like this.” I was on the verge of tears.
“Cove,” he sternly spoke. “Get dressed. I’ll be waiting for you downstairs.”
He turned to leave, but stopped dead in his tracks when I declared, “You’re better than this, Jace.”
He stayed froze where he stood, not bothering to turn around.
Which only gave me more ammunition to keep going. “What if I told you I’m in love with you? Would you still be trying to push me away right now?”
I didn’t know what I expected out of him, but it still hurt like a bitch when he didn’t say a word.
No response.
No emotion.
Nothing.
All he did was walk away from me with my heart pouring out for him.
I stayed there, rationalizing the abrupt change in his demeanor. The man with me yesterday was long gone, and in his place was the contract killer I kept encountering.
I tried to figure out where he was taking me and what would happen next before I jumped out of bed. I couldn’t help but remember that I slept in his arms last night and now he was pretending like none of what happened yesterday mattered anymore.
Once I took a shower and brushed my teeth, I felt much more at ease. However, I knew whatever occurred next wasn’t going to be easy by any means. Despite sleeping in his arms, it didn’t change his demeanor. He was again the soldier, hiding behind his uniform.
I dressed in jean shorts, a tank top, and sandals, leaving my hair down with mascara, blush, and lip gloss. I knew I took longer than he probably expected, but he didn’t say anything when I walked into his living room ready to go.
He drove us in awkward silence as I craved for him to put his hand on my thigh like he had all day prior. I longed for him to comfort me with a touch, a gesture, wishing what transpired last night would have changed the outcome of this morning.
One thing I was sure of, I knew he wouldn’t hurt me, at least not physically. Now emotionally and mentally was a much different story. He just stared out the windshield, rubbing his fingers across his lips, lost in his own thoughts, in his own demons. In his own world like I’d never seen before.
The car ride could have lasted a minute, an hour, or a few days. Time just seemed to stand still again but not like yesterday. It felt as though every second that passed between us was another moment in time for him. It felt like I was the hell he constantly lived in.
Without thinking, I reached over and placed my hand on his, lacing our fingers together before giving him a reassuring squeeze. His eyes quickly darted at my kind gesture as if he was waiting for something I didn’t understand. His hand remained lax, and he didn’t return my sentiment. After a few seconds, he looked back up, not giving my affection any more consideration.
Too many plaguing thoughts consumed him, which scared me in a way it hadn’t yet. Whatever was about to happen was going to hurt badly and there was no denying the emotions wreaking havoc all around us.
We drove to what appeared to be a park that was surrounded by beautiful trees and greenery. My heart sped up as we neared our final destination. Tree after tree whipped by the black tinted windows, causing shadows in our path as they started to blur in the background and fade into the distance.
