“I almost like your plans for our anniversary best.”

“Almost?”

Every year we’ve tried to outdo one another; no matter who triumphs, we always end up a sweaty mess in our sheets. Last year, I won, re-enacting book club from our first time. At the bach, on the same bed and everything. The time before that, he won with one-hundred and fifty litres of oat milk filling his bathtub.

There’s something about his quirking lips though that has my belly full of butterflies. “How do you plan on beating me this year, Damon?”

Damon drums his fingers over the mannequin. “Originally, I thought of doing this at the restaurant, but this is better.” He drops to one knee and takes my hand.

My stomach falls right out of my feet. “I’m naked!”

“Not entirely naked.”

“Damon.”

He laughs. “This couldn’t be more perfect, in your sewing corner, in things”—we both glance at the bow tie—“you’ve sewn with love.”

I’m shaking my head. He’s unbelievable.

I love him so much it hurts.

He kisses my fingertips and pulls out a velvet box.

My heart is pounding and I’m no longer sure if I’m laughing or crying; I suspect it’s something between the two.

Two beautiful white gold bands sit encased in silk. He lifts the megaphone and I know what he’s about to say. Oh God. I can see his lips forming the words. Will you marry me—

“Can I marry you?”

Wait, what?

“I really, really want to be part of your family. I want your last name and I want all the world to know I belong to you.”

I laugh and sniff; rise onto my toes and taste the satisfaction in his smile. “Of course you do.” I take hold of his wrist and bring the megaphone to my own lips. “I’m a catch!”
