Once we got inside his apartment, we couldn’t keep our hands from roaming and our mouths from crashing together repeatedly. He dragged me down the hall to his bedroom, where we tried to be quiet for his sleeping roommate but probably failed miserably as I lifted his skirts, ripped down his sexy garter with my teeth, and fucked him into his mattress.

Afterward, I wrapped Jesse in my arms, and as he fell asleep with his head on my chest, my heart beat an unsteady rhythm just for him.

Jesse

The next few weeks were…weird. Dane and I hung out a lot, sometimes just him and me, other times it was Dane, me, and Hailey, or Dane, Seth, and me, or me hanging out at his house with him, Hailey, and Bree.

It wasn’t something we talked about, really. There wasn’t this do-you-realize-we’re-hanging-out-all-the-time discussion going. It was more like…Do you wanna come up when you take me home? Yeah, sure, I can go to your house with you tonight. What are we doing this weekend? Hailey says we should go…

I didn’t know if he realized we were basically boyfriends, but I sure as shit wasn’t going to mention it. I still wasn’t sure how I felt about it all. I mean, obviously I liked Dane. I enjoyed fucking him and spending time with him, but the B word was a new one for me, and with his ex being the asshole he was, I didn’t know if that was something Dane wanted.

Or if it was something I wanted.

But I thought maybe I did, and holy fuck, how did this happen?

It was all screwing with my head but not enough for me to stop. Never enough for me to stop.

“I feel like maybe I should stop sneaking into bed with you,” Seth whispered softly from beside me. I had no idea when he’d shown up, but I never did, and I was okay with that. Seth was my best friend. There was nothing sexual between us, and I would always be there for him.

“Why?” I asked, rolling over.

He was all rumpled-looking and like he hadn’t had much sleep. Usually when Seth climbed into bed with me, he would cuddle me. He was a snuggler if I ever saw one, and whenever he did get a boyfriend, he better like someone affectionate, but as I lay there, I realized he hadn’t been as touchy as he usually was.

“Because your boyfriend might not like it.”

I rolled my eyes. “I don’t have a boyfriend,” I countered, but really, I was thinking…Oh my God! He sees it too! Do I really have a boyfriend? Obviously, I wasn’t proud of that fact, but it was true. My thoughts were out of control lately, and it was all because of my grumpy, friends-with-benefits, coworker Dane.

“You so have a boyfriend.”

“Do not.”

“Do too.”

“Do not— Ugh, but still, you’re my friend. Dane would understand.” But really, now that I thought about it, I didn’t know if he would. He’d been through a lot, and he’d been the one to bring up not having fun with other people when we were having fun with each other. Seth and I weren’t doing anything, but I could see how it might make Dane uncomfortable. This relationship shit was hard, and I didn’t even know if I was in one or not.

“Yeah, but it feels weird. I don’t want to put you in an awkward position.”

Why do you have nightmares? I wanted to ask him, but I didn’t. I knew he wouldn’t tell me. “You’re the bestest bestie that ever bestied. We’ll be fine.”

Seth laughed and rolled his eyes, sitting up.

“But I don’t have a boyfriend,” I added.

“Whatever you say!” he replied, getting out of bed and leaving the room.

Ugh. I seriously might have a boyfriend.

Seth and I had breakfast together, and then I jumped in the shower. Dane had Hailey today, and we were supposed to go see a movie. It was a dreary November day in Portland, so ya know, rain. There wasn’t much to do besides movies and other indoor activities. Plus, Bree had gotten some coupons at work, so we got it half price.

My hair was getting a tad longer and needed another buzz, but I figured I could do that later. I put light makeup on and was ready just as Dane texted to let me know he and Hailey were there.

“Do you want to go with us?” I asked Seth as he sat at his piano, playing softly. I was sure Dane wouldn’t mind.

“Nah, that’s okay. I have some studying to do.”

“Okay, if you’re sure.” I kissed his cheek and headed out.

“Desse!” Hailey squealed when I got into the car. I almost leaned over and kissed Dane, but I knew he was careful about stuff like that in front of Hailey because…well, I guess because we weren’t really boyfriends, so there was my answer.
