My husband smiles as he gazes into my eyes.

“Of course, honey. I always knew you would,” he says in a soothing tone. “We’ll hire a nanny to take care of Haley while you pursue a degree because of course, you have to follow your dreams.” My eyes tear up from his words because I have the best husband in the world. But then, Eric winks.

“But be prepared to be pregnant while you’re in school because I want you barefoot with my baby in your belly, Kitty,” he growls in a warning tone. “I’m not kidding.”

I merely laugh before wrapping my arms around his broad shoulders because I know Eric’s speaking the truth. Maybe not literally, because I won’t be barefoot or dressed in rags. Instead, I’ll have the finest shoes, clothes, cars, and home at my disposal, not to mention tutors and study aids. But all that’s in the future, and I cock my head while taking in the tableaux of my husband with our daughter in his arms.

“Oh, and guess what?” I ask with a sly smile.

Eric shoots a look at me.

“What is it?” he asks. “I know you’re thinking of something.”

I nod.

“Well, it turns out that I’m not the only one who’s moving up in the world. Do you remember Maggie from the palace? She used to work as a maid too.”

Eric shakes his head.

“Honestly, no, sweetheart. You know I never paid attention to the staff. Other than you, of course,” he adds hastily, jiggling Haley up and down. “Why, what about her?”

I nod.

“Well, it turns out that Mags is moving to New York! She got a job at a pet store, and wants to take classes to become a vet tech.”

Eric looks confused.

“That sounds like a big change. What’s a vet tech?”

I nod.

“It’s basically a physician’s assistant, but instead of helping a doctor treat human patients, you help a vet see animals instead. It sounds great, doesn’t it?”

Eric nods.

“Sure. I mean, not everyone works for the palace forever. People definitely move on to other things.”

I nod.

“Yes, but it turns out that New York is crazy because Maggie’s met a billionaire there. How does that even happen?”

Eric looks just as confounded.

“While working at the pet store?”

I nod.

“Yeah, that’s what she says. She says this guy walked in one day, all formal in a fancy business suit, and a dog peed on him or something like that. But then, in a turn of events, he asked her to be his fake fiancée because he needs it for some company inheritance thing. Isn’t that weird?”

Eric shrugs.

“It is, but then again, we just went through our own inheritance drama here, so I’ll keep my lip zipped.”

I laugh while leaning my head against my husband’s broad shoulder, at peace and so happy. Haley giggles too, clutching at my curls, and Eric tries to pull her away before she gets a fistful, but it’s too late. Our little girl has a handful of my locks in her small fingers, and he has to carefully disengage before she pulls all my hair out.

“I hope things work out for Mags,” I muse in a thoughtful tone. “She was always so fun and spicy, but I’m sure moving to the big city must be a shock.”

Eric merely leans forward to give me a kiss while keeping Haley in his opposite arm.

“Who knows? Anything can happen in New York, you know that, honey. And maybe your friend will meet a prince too. Or maybe this billionaire guy is a prince, and she’ll end up with a crown on her head.”

I giggle while swatting him on the shoulder.

“You know there’s no formal royalty in America. There’s only the “Camelot” of the Kennedy era! But yes, that would be astonishing wouldn’t it? If somehow, Maggie married into informal American royalty, and became the wife of a billionaire businessman! Wouldn’t it be crazy?”

“No, it wouldn’t,” Eric says in a low voice, leaning forward to kiss me again. “Because I found you, Kitty Light, and you’re my princess. You’re my everything, and our story only shows that anything can happen.”

I melt into his arms then as our daughter coos because Eric’s right. Against all odds, a maid from housekeeping met a prince of the kingdom, and somehow, our love has survived against all odds. But none of the trappings of the royal life matter to me because I don’t actually care about castles, tiaras, jewelry, or any of the material things that come with a fancy life. I just care that I have the best husband in the world at my side, and Eric loves me and treats me like his princess – now that’s the real fairytale come true.
