“Here, I’ll take Jonah,” I said, hoping the combination of changing the subject and offering to take the load of the little, but surprisingly heavy, baby off him would convince him to drop the whole thing. I was so wrong.

“Sure, here you go.” He delicately moved Jonah over to me. Jonah was a pretty deep sleeper, much to Kane and Danica’s relief, and he didn’t stir when he ended up in my arms.

“Did you offer to bring her chicken noodle soup?” Cam asked. “Maybe in a little nurse’s outfit? I think they sell those down at Myrna’s. Not very functional, but it gets the point across.”

I grinned. I didn’t really care what they said. They were my brothers, and as such it was their job to rib me as much as humanly possible about anything and everything they could. All in all, them ribbing me over getting Camilla’s phone number wasn’t the worst thing in the world to get hazed for. I was willing to take it if it really did end up meaning we would go to dinner sometime soon and I would get a chance to see her when she wasn’t feeling as low as she was that day.

Kane and Cameron continued poking at me, coming up with some really solid digs considering that Cam was more known for being the butt of our jokes and Kane was the mellowest one of all of us. I didn’t mind. I carried Jonah across my chest with his head on my shoulder and let them have their fun.

CHAPTER 15

CAMILLA

I walked back to my car in a bit of a daze. That interaction hadn’t gone at all the way I expected it to. Not many guys would ask you out after you nearly puked all over their shoes. Alex King was an enigma.

I realized I’d been sitting in my car in the parking area near the market for far too long and headed home. When I got inside and put my limited bag of produce on the counter, I took out my phone and called Fiona. She would be able to interpret the whole situation. It rang a few times and then went to voicemail. I called again, but the same thing happened.

It was extremely rare that she didn’t answer her phone when I called, so I anticipated the text that came just a few seconds after I hung up from the second call. The message told me she was out with some business associates and couldn’t talk right then. She let me know she had a date later, but she would get in touch soon.

That left me with no option but to sit and wait to talk to someone about what just happened. I waited for a few seconds for the possibility Fiona would change her mind. When the phone didn’t ring, I headed into the kitchen. I dug through the greens in the bag to find the three apples I chose before getting the array of greens and pulled them out.

I rinsed them, then used my favorite new kitchen gadget, a round cutter that cored and sliced an apple all at the same time to reduce each one of them to wedges. Using a rubber spatula to scoop up some peanut butter, I put it in a small bowl and then filled another with little crunchy cereal nuggets. It was a snack I’d always loved, enjoying dipping the apples first in the peanut butter and then using that as sticky glue to gather up some of the cereal.

I sat back down on the couch and turned on the TV. I nibbled through a few bites of the apple and tried to concentrate on the show, but my thoughts kept wandering back to Alex at the market.

There was nothing in our conversation that seemed to be a springboard for him to ask me out. We hadn’t even really had a whole conversation.

I decided it was time to give Alex the option of utilizing the escape clause. Wiping off my hands on the napkin I brought with me into the living room, I picked up my phone and pulled up the brand-new contact entry for Alex. I selected the text option and quickly typed up a message.

You doubly sure?

Before I could second-guess myself and erase the message, I sent it. I slid my phone onto the coffee table in front of me, but my fingers were barely off it when it chimed to alert me to a new message.

Absolutely, the message from Alex said. Why wouldn’t I be? You have a deep appreciation for greens and may throw up at any moment. Who could resist that?

A laugh burst out of me. That was definitely not the kind of response I was expecting.

It would be kind of tough, I messaged back. But I thought if you were just overwhelmed by the sheer irresistibility of it all, I would give you the option of walking away.
