I just wanted to fucking sleep. To slip into some oblivion where my goddamn head wasn’t constantly racing with thoughts I didn’t want to be thinking.

“I run an outlaw biker club, man. There’s always something to work out,” I said, shrugging it off.

“Except shit has been good with the club,” Detroit pressed. “Easier than usual. Smooth enough that Riff and Raff have been here for a while and we aren’t hurting for money. So what lie do you want to come up with next?” he asked.

See, now, this was both the major asset and huge flaw of having guys work for you who have known you for a long fucking time. They couldn’t be fooled. They knew when shit was off.

And while Sway and Crow were more the types to let shit slide, Detroit was someone who was always going to make it clear that he was there if you needed him.

But he usually stopped just short of pressing.

I was feeling pretty fucking pressed right then.

Though, yeah, maybe that was just because I was in a shit mood.

I was about to open my mouth and insist nothing was wrong when Coach came walking out of the locker room with an arm full of clothes.

“Do I want to know?” I asked as he took the clothes and dumped them in one of the garbage bins that were kept around to toss the sanitizing wipes in.

“Know what?” he asked, looking all innocent, but there was a wicked look in his eyes.

“Let me guess. Those clothes belonged to one of your old COs?” I asked, feeling a smirk tug at my lips, shocked I was even capable of it.

“I’m not saying they weren’t,” Coach said, trying to hold back a laugh. “But I’m not saying they were, either. You talk to him about this dark cloud yet?” Coach asked, waving over my head like there was one floating above me.

“Working on it,” Detroit said.

To that, Coach nodded, clapping Detroit on the shoulder, then walking away. He let out a big old laugh when he heard the cursing coming from the locker room before he disappeared around the corner of the building, though.

“Ah, excuse me,” a soft, female voice called, making both of us turn to find the girl from the front desk standing there with a drink in her hands.

She was a pretty blonde, all soft and sweet. Fit, but still with some curves in all the right places. Not my type, but gorgeous.

Everleigh.

We knew her from the gym, but also because we’d saved her sister a while back when she and Crow’s girl, Morgaine, had been kidnapped by Everleigh’s sister’s ex.

“What’s up, Ev?” Detroit asked.

“This is for you,” she said, passing me a blended drink from the juice bar. “It’s not a nice gesture, so don’t thank me,” she said, giving me a smile. “You’ve been working out too hard and I don’t want to have to fill out an incident report if you pass out. So… drink up,” she said, standing there, stubbornly waiting until I took a sip.

“Fuck, that’s disgusting,” I said, wincing at the bitter taste.

“Hey,” Detroit scolded, jerking his head toward Everleigh as if to say I was being rude and he didn’t want me hurting the girl’s feelings.

“No, it’s okay,” she said, giving Detroit a sly smile. “I made it gross on purpose.”

“The fuck for?” I asked, raking my tongue across the roof of my mouth, trying to wipe the taste off.

“Well, it’s because of you that I’m not allowed to play Taylor Swift anymore,” she said. “Which, obviously, is not cool of you.”

“When the fuck did I say…”

“You mumbled to Gav ‘the fuck is this shit’ on your way in,” she told me, and I vaguely remembered saying that.

“That’s it?”

I missed Detroit waving his hand across his throat in a ‘cut it out’ motion until it was too late.

“I’ve had a shitty day in a shitty week in a shitty month in a shitty year and all I wanted to do was listen to some happy pop music. Now I can’t. Gav blocked it. So the moral is… don’t be a dick. Good luck getting that taste out of your mouth. Morgaine told me it was going to hang around for a while,” she said, giving us a devilish smirk before walking off.

“Really?” I grumbled when I caught Detroit sneaking a discreet glance at her tight ass as she walked away. “She practically poisoned me and you’re checking her out?”

“I wasn’t checking anyone out,” Detroit lied.

He wasn’t usually much of a liar. But he also wasn’t usually someone who ogled women, either.

Detroit, as fucking foreign as this idea was to me, didn’t do casual. I mean, sure, he’d hooked up a couple of times over the years, but not like the other guys did.

And it wasn’t because he couldn’t get the women.
