“Careful,” Grinch warns.

I look over at him, feigning shock. “Sir? Who are you?”

“Ha ha,” he mutters, equally annoyed.

It’s just a couple of us guys, no female better halves to be found.

“Where’s Grace?” I ask Grinch before turning my attention back to Legend. “Where’s Faith?”

These sorry fucks seem incapable of focusing when their women aren’t around. It’s just more proof that becoming that dependent on someone else isn’t healthy.

“Fucking yoga with Rivet,” Grinch mutters.

“Faith went to see Big Daddy,” Legend answers.

“Sylvie’s grandfather?” I ask, recalling her using that name at the wedding reception a few days ago. “How is he doing?”

Legend narrows his eyes at me like I’m the biggest asshole he’s ever seen.

“Don’t look at me like that. I overheard her talking about him. She seemed worried.”

“And that makes you worried as well?” Legend challenges.

“Don’t be a dick. I’m not an asshole for being concerned for someone.”

“He’s getting better,” Legend answers after watching my face for a long, silent moment.

As if the heavens opened up and answered all his prayers, the sad look in his eyes fades away.

“Hey,” Faith says, not wasting a second when she approaches, to press her lips to his.

Legend wraps his huge arms around her, holding her even tighter when she tries to wiggle away as he pulls her onto his lap.

“This is a family establishment,” I remind them.

Legend only has eyes for his woman. “Is Sylvie parking the car?”

“She’s heading home.”

My eyes dart out the window, but I don’t see a car leaving the parking lot.

I remain quiet, for some reason waiting for the topic of conversation to drift back to Faith’s best friend.

Legend lifts his hand to get the waitress’s attention, and I fold over myself a little further as she approaches.

Grinch chuckles, and I can only imagine Faith has a confused look in her eyes, but I won’t risk making eye contact with the barely legal girl as she approaches.

“What can I get for you?” Even her voice betrays her young age.

“I’d like a cheeseburger,” Faith says. “With fries and a Coke, please.”

“What about you?” I flinch when her warm palm presses to my back. “Do you need anything, handsome?”

Grinch chuckles again.

“No,” I grunt, not feeling at ease until she walks away.

“What was that all about?” Faith asks, smiling as I look up to see her settled beside Legend rather than still sitting in his lap.

“Constance has a crush on him,” Legend helpfully supplies.

“She’s like sixteen,” Faith says, her face doing that familiar scrunching thing she’s always doing.

“She’s nineteen,” Grinch corrects. “Max looked her up the last time she waited on us.”

I shudder. “Still too damn young.”

Faith chuckles. “Tell her you’re not interested.”

When Grinch laughs this time, I kick his leg under the table.

“He did,” Legend says. “She ignored him. Gets all touchy feely when he comes in.”

“You should ask her to stop. If you were the one rubbing on her back when she didn’t want it, there would be an uproar,” Faith says, and I smile at her anger in my defense.

“I’d kick your ass personally,” Grinch adds.

Faith glares at him before looking back at me. “This double-standard bullshit really pisses me off,” she hisses.

“Shit,” Legend snaps when Constance heads back in our direction.

“Please just leave it alone,” I beg. “I don’t want to embarrass her.”

“Are you wanting to leave the option open?” Faith asks.

“Fuck no. She’s way too young for me.”

She gives me a quick nod, looking up at Constance like she’s as sweet as pie.

Constance’s hand sweeps down my back, and I do my best to avoid cringing.

“He’s got three ex-wives and six kids he doesn’t take care of.”

“What?” Constance asks on a little laugh like she can’t believe her ears.

Grinch and Legend both try to cover their own laughter with their hands. They both fail miserably.

“If you were thinking getting with him would be a win,” Faith adds. “Three ex-wives and six kids.”

Constance’s hand immediately leaves my back. “I’ll have your order out to you shortly.”

I wait until the waitress disappears into the kitchen before speaking.

“Seriously? She’s going to spread that all over town!”

“The biker bunnies won’t care,” Faith says with a shrug.

I open my mouth to argue further, but her glare is a challenge.

I have no doubt that Sylvie opened her mouth about me not remembering our night together.

I stand, pull twenty dollars from my wallet, and drop it on the table.

“Fair enough,” I say, hoping this make us even in her mind.

“Where are you headed?” Grinch asks.

“For a ride,” I mutter before walking away.

There aren’t many times that riding a bike are miserable, but being open to the elements, especially in the winter, is one of them.

I hate the days we’re in New Mexico, and it’s not because of the environment or the people. I’d rather be on a mission, doing something that keeps my mind as busy as my body.
