He took one of the tiny teeth out and looked at it, then placed it back into the bag with the note. Folding it tightly, he slipped it back into the box, got up, and slid on his brown leather jacket. He then grabbed the rental car keys and headed out the front door.

I believe in magic, still. The magic of the truth! Time to have a little chat with Clifford…

“He’s hard to read,” Azure explained to her friend. “I can’t claim it, girl. I also don’t know his sign.” She dipped her paintbrush in the water, then continued working on her painting of her friend India, who sat in her apartment getting sloshed. “He seems like a Virgo but said he wasn’t. That mothafucka lyin’.”

“Why would he lie about that?” She picked up the remote and turned up the music. ‘Lay Down’ by Floetry flowed through her home.

“Because he’s a mind fucker. He likes playin’ mind games. I can tell. Now, in fairness, he’s a little more romantic than your average Virgo, but everything else matches. You know Virgos drive me crazy with all of their finicky ways, and they can be moody and cruel. Judgmental, too. They can whore around a lot with few inhibitions. They’re undercover freaks, too… don’t let that virgin symbol fool you. So fucking sexy… And usually talented in a surprising way, like with musical instruments or writing. Ughhh! I bet his moon sign is Pisces or Libra.”

“You’re thinking far too much about this. You know you have to handle astrology with a grain of salt.”

“I handle it with pepper and paprika, season it to perfection, you know. And honey please understand, I’m not sayin’ it’s my religion or anything—nothin’ replaces my intuition, gut instinct, and my soul hold to my Creator,” she pointed to the ceiling, “…but there’s some truth in it.” India nodded in agreement. “That would explain his romantic nature if he had a Libra moon or Pisces rising. He fucks like a Scorpio. Walks like a Leo. Talks like a Pisces. Conducts business like a Virgo.”

Her mind was running laps now. “He’s got to be a Virgo or Libra sun sign then though… Damn. I think that mothafucka lyin’. He SCREAMS Virgo, girl. And his memory… I noticed he recalls people’s names really well—more Virgo shit. If it ain’t his sun sign, it rules his chart in several places.” She seized her towel, dried off her brush, and grabbed a smaller one. “I rarely get this wrong. If he’s a Virgo, I’m gonna jump off a bridge, girl. They’re know-it-alls and crazy as hell. They are smart though… which is also a turn-on, but can be obsessive as fuck about details that don’t matter to shit else but them.”

“That sounds a bit like you, too.”

“Thank you. I’m ’bout to kick you out my mothafuckin’ house.” Azure and her friend giggled, truly amused. “You ain’t exactly lyin’ though. Anyway, you know it’s drivin’ me crazy. I looked him up online, girl, and can’t find his birthday anywhere. I’m about to pay for a background search. Should have done it anyway. These mothafuckas crazy nowadays. It’s like he omitted it in his bio or was hatched from a mothafuckin’ egg. He’s a public figure! How can he not have a birthday?!”

“Did you ask him what his birthday was, Azure? Sometimes you try to play inspector when a simple question will do,” India said as she curled her legs beneath her on her couch, holding tight to her third glass of red wine.

“Yeah, I asked on our first date! Now that he knows I want to know it for astrology purposes, he’s playing games and won’t tell me.” She sucked her teeth, dipped her paint brush into the black oil paint, and resumed work on the eyes.

“Are you going to call him back or pass him along to someone like me, so I can at least get a joyride?”

Azure looked over at the lady and rolled her eyes. “Yeah, I’m going to call him. I just need to get my thoughts together. He was over the top. I can’t stop thinkin’ about him though and believe me, I’ve tried.”

Her stomach fluttered when she entertained visions of him, remembering the heat of his kiss, the beautiful torture of his touch. The way he smelled, so clean and beautiful. And those eyes… Jesus.

“What do you mean by over the top? Like he’s loud and crazy?”

“No. He’s kinda quiet and reserved in public, actually. It’s sexy how he switches up… and creepy, too. Code switch. Hell, his ass might be bipolar, for real, for real, and he ain’t told me. If he is, I should be ashamed, because here I am fetishizing his dichotomy. No cap. He’s got dual energy, girl. Hot and cold. He’s hella passionate and intuitive, but at the same time, keeps me at arm’s length. I could tell he likes me though. Obviously he does, the bastard keeps callin’ while I try ’nd collect my thoughts.”
