Chapter Twenty-Six

Azure sat across from three lovely ladies. English, who was educated, poised, beautiful, and proper with a rascally streak. Desiree—hood, down to earth, gorgeous, talented, and about her business. Melanie, Legend’s sister, was hilarious and didn’t have any filter.

Now here she was—the latest to be inducted in their group.

These men choose wisely…

“Now, I have to be honest with you, Azure,” English stated behind a flawlessly made-up face, her hair in a sloppy bun with silver and black Chinese sticks stuck in it. The woman sipped delicately on an apple martini. “We were all extremely curious, for months, about who Caspian was marrying.”

“Oh… so he’s so private, you didn’t even know what type of woman he’d want, huh?”

“Well, Legend and Axel have been practically begging to meet you. They finally did and came back with a favorable report. But see, now it’s our turn.”

“Oh, is that so? Am I being graded on a curve?” English and Desiree burst out laughing. Melanie shook her head and smirked.

“No curve, but we’ve heard a lot about you lately. I find it amazing that you’re an artist, and an accomplished one at that. I’m dying to see your portfolio.”

“Sure, anytime. In fact, I have an art show coming up next summer. This time it’s local so I would love for you to come.”

“I’ll be there.” English waved down the waitress to get another martini and more nachos for the table.

“Is that your real hair? It looks like it’s your real hair!”

“Melanie, you rude as hell!” Desiree barked.

“I don’t know why that’s rude! It’s pretty, regardless of whether it’s hers or not, but I want to know if those are butterfly locs she’s committed to, or can they be replaced tomorrow? Church.”

“Don’t go bringin’ your brother’s shit to this table. I’m so happy to be away from Legend tonight I don’t know what to do! He is so damn hyper sometimes, and if I hear ‘Church’ one more time this week, I’m going to bury him under one!”

Everyone was cackling again.

“Yes, it’s my hair, Melanie. No, I’m not offended. We’re all about to be family soon, so it’s cool. Anyway, I’ve had these locs for eight years. Been thinking about cutting them but for now, they stay.”

“Well, they’re beautiful, and so are you. I want to talk to you about contracting you for a mural at the restaurant, Azure,” Desiree chimed in, leaning forward, showing her big, bouncy cleavage.

“Thank you for the compliment, and I’m interested in the discussion. I met Legend and Axel at the restaurant recently. It’s lovely! Legendary Desires is such a cute name, too, and the food… Damn! Is that your husband’s menu? Legend throwin’ down like that?!”

“Thank you! Yup, that’s all my baby’s food, ’cept for the pineapple pound cake. That’s my grandmama’s recipe.”

“My brother can cook his ass off,” Melanie added. “He should have done this years ago.” Everyone nodded in agreement.

“We worked really hard on our restaurant, and we’re still working on it. I want to leave a legacy for our children,” Desiree stated.

“That’s a smart move. More of us Black people need to plan for the future, and not just for today. We need to save our money and invest. I could talk more about that, but first let me say, girl, you have some of the deepest and prettiest dimples I’ve ever seen. You’re just stunning,” Azure complimented.

“Thank you! Legend said it was the first thing he noticed about me.” She grinned.

Azure rolled her eyes. “If you believe that shit, I’ve got a bridge to sell you in Lexington. Girl, he was lookin’ at those triple Ds. ‘D’ is not for dimple in this instance. I ain’t even bisexual and they caught my eye and made me salivate, too. They look like McDonald’s arches, heavin’ up out of your shirt. Da, da, da, da, daaaah, I’m lovin’ it.” The table erupted in laughter and Desiree waved her finger as if to say, ‘You’re right.’

“All of y’all are so pretty… Wow.” The women offered a profusion of thanks and returned the compliment. “…and I love how different but compatible you are. I can see why y’all became fast friends. Caspian said y’all are very close, too. He was excited for me to meet you.”

“We are close. Just like Caspian, Legend, and Axel. We look out for one another. Help babysit each other’s children. Mel knew English first, and then I met Melanie and English through Legend, naturally,” Desiree explained.

“Mmm hmmm, okay.” She took a taste of her wine and set it down. So, these are the first ladies… The BDW – Brothers Disciples Wives… plus a sister. I can dig it.

“So, what color will the bridesmaids’ dresses be?” English’s lips curled, as if she’d been pondering that for hours.

“I’m undecided but I’m leaning toward many different shades of green.”
