“Oh. Oh!” His face went up in flames. “Sorry. I got ahead of myself.”

She frowned. “You could say so.”

“I’ll… get a cup. And I’ll come to your room once it’s err… ready.”

Rain sniggered and patted his arm. “Hell yes! Let’s make some babies!”

He gave her a high five but then felt awkward about it and spun around, wishing he could wipe both their memories of that conversation, so they could miraculously discover Mona’s pregnancy in a few weeks, without having to deal with the technicalities.

He managed to make his way upstairs without being seen, and while he felt guilty over sneaking around like this, the stale odor of his room brought unexpected relief.

Other than a layer of dust, nothing had changed here. He grabbed a plastic cup from a pack of ten in his cupboard and lay down on the bed with a deep exhale, already unbuckling his belt. What he was about to do felt so strange he could hardly think of it as real. He’d be a dad. It would come to be in a weird, convoluted way, but none of that would matter once he held his newborn child in his arms.

Problem was, the wholesome vision was the least arousing thing he could imagine. Heart-melting and joyful—it definitely was, but what he needed was masturbatory fodder, not thoughts of a happy family.

He lowered his pants enough to grab his soft cock, only to realize that his go-to fantasy was Zolt and his strong hands pressing him down. But the moment he thought of their final kiss, of that wonderful moment on the sofa, when Zolt came inside him, the lamp above became a blur when Leo teared up.

Maybe he could use his phone and put on some porn, like a normal person? Maybe the sight of naked bodies moving together would stop his mind from straying to places that were now parched and dead like a desert.

He turned on his favorite streaming service, but then hesitated. Should he watch gay porn? Was that a thing he’d do from now on?

His thumb hovered over the search button when someone called, and he automatically pressed ‘accept’. Great. There he was, lying with his dick in hand, and he’d have to entertain a normal conversation on the phone.

“Yes?” he groaned wishing that this wasn’t Mike asking him out for a drink with the Exterminators, because he couldn’t have made himself do the right thing. Not now.

The line seemed dead for a moment, creaking as if someone had put their headset away while they waited for him to pick up, but just as he was about to finish the call and return to his dreary task, one that needed precision and focus, a familiar voice caressed his ear and touched his nape, as if it was a heavy, warm hand.

“Leo.”

All the hairs on his body bristled, and of course, like the horny idiot it was, his dick answered Zolt’s call.

Leo should have had some goddamn pride and hung up, but he squeezed his phone instead, deep down clinging to the hope that Zolt had thought things through and was calling to grovel. He longed to hear Zolt’s deep voice say that he needed him, that he already missed him, and that he loved him back. That the notebook was gone, and the people Zolt had written about didn’t matter, because all he wanted was a future with Leo.

The line creaked when Zolt exhaled, taking his time with the answer while Leo’s guts twisted like snakes trapped in a pit. “I’m real drunk, Leo… like… almost passed out drunk,” Zolt said, the slur in his voice clear now that he had to say more than the single syllable of Leo’s name.

Leo pressed the phone to his forehead in frustration. “Seriously? You’re drunk-calling me? Just go to sleep.”

“Can’t. I’m in the back of a bar.”

Leo took a deep breath. “What do you want? I’m in the middle of… something.”

Zolt took his time answering, his liquor-soaked brain incapable of coming up with simple answers. “Can’t drive, and I’ve… lost my wallet, Leo.”

Anger flared Leo’s heart and set his brain on fire. So Leo wasn’t good enough to be with, but remained the first port of call when Zolt needed someone to pick up the pieces? “Call Neil. I bet he’ll be happy to help you out with all your needs.”

Zolt grunted, and something cracked in the background, as if he’d rolled over dry branches. “I don’t want Neil.”

Leo shouldn't have felt good hearing that, but he couldn’t help it. “Where are you?”

His anger grew when Zolt gave him an address in Reno, but he still wrote it down, already knowing he’d go and save Zolt's ass, no matter how mad he was at him.

He was pathetic. “Under one condition.”

“Hn?”

“You need to help me out with… something. I’m not in the right headspace, and if I’m to pick you up, I need to get this done. I… Mona’s ovulating, and I need to— you know. But you haven’t left me in the best headspace for jerking off.”
