“Hey Mercedes.”

“How may I help?”

“Call Dante.”

“Okay, I am calling Dante.”

I swerve a bit into the other side of the road. I need to pull over. I roll down the window and pull onto the side of the road.

“Hello?” Dante answers.

“Dante?” I slur.

“Where are you?”

I give a drunken smile as I hear the protector in his voice. I’m still his wife. He wouldn’t allow anything to happen to me.

However, hearing his voice pisses me off all over again. This is all his fault. He’s trying to take everything from me.

“Don’t act like you care now. You canceled all of my cards and froze my accounts. You turned him against me. You turned everyone against me.”

I still can’t believe Franky’s not answering my calls. If he would answer, I could hand him the keys his grandfather has been looking for. Once Dante is locked up, and out of the way, I can get to his offshore accounts.

Hell, I can drain Bella’s accounts. It’s not like the little brat needs all that money.

“I told you to stop running to my father in the first place,” he snarls.

I laugh. He would think I’m talking about his father. The asshole really thought I wanted to date his young ass in high school. His arrogance helped me to trap him.

“Your father? I’m not talking about your father. You know what’s the worst part? I should have married him, not you. My father was so hell-bent on a marriage between us, and the sex was amazing, but I never loved you. Not like him.”

Yes, Dante can fuck. I mean, really fuck. That’s something I might miss. He’s amazing in bed, but I’ve never fallen for him. I’ve stupidly been loyal to Franky. Well, I think it’s time I’m loyal to myself.

Fuck them all.

“What the fuck are you talking about?” Dante seethes.

“The man I was forced to give up, the one I should have had a child with,” I slur. I smile wider as I decide to twist the dagger with a little lie. “He was going to help me. I told him everything about you and your family. He was going to make sure you all went to jail, and I could be free.

“Now, he won’t even take my calls. I’m ready to leave and he doesn’t want me. Don’t act stupid, Dante. You know what you did.”

It had to be him. He must have gotten to Franky. I thought he was onto me when he blocked the purchase of the truck. Now I know he is.

Nyla

Her car has stopped moving. I narrow my eyes at the screen before me and see there’s a road that leads me right to her. I’ve had enough of this for one night.

Stepping on the gas, I rush to the road she’s at the base of. When it comes into view, I notice the ditch she’s parked in front of.

“Perfect,” I purr to myself.

I floor it down the hill, heading right into the side of her truck. The downhill momentum of the pickup truck will do the damage I need. My heart is pumping as I get ready to jump.

Bethany turns right as I get up on her and I swear I can see her mouth forming the words Oh God, just before I put the truck in neutral. I open the door and jump out.

My black leather gloves shield my hands from scrapes as I roll and come up on my toes. My lips turn up into a smile as I look at the pickup sitting on the edge of the cliff. The railing is broken, and Bethany’s truck is gone.

I stand as there’s an explosion down below in the ditch. The sound of a motorcycle catches my attention. I turn to find Jace holding out a helmet for me. I rush to take it, not bothering to take off my mask before putting it on, then I climb on the bike behind him.

As soon as my arms are wrapped around his waist, he takes off. We have to make it to New York and then we need to be seen. I pray we’re not stopped before we’re out of the area as Jace rides like the flames of hell are on our asses.

Once we cross the toll into New York City from New Jersey, I release a breath and give his waist a gentle squeeze. I miss having him this close. I snake my hand beneath his shirt and run it up his chest.

Stopping my palm over his heart, I close my eyes and revel in the beating of his heart. I’ve never thought about why I do this often with him and Gio. Listening for their heartbeats. However, in this moment, it hits me that it’s a sign they’re alive and safe.

I need the reassurance. I fear losing them to this thing more than I’ve ever truly admitted. It’s one of the things that’s never been an in-your-face reality to me because I’ve been hidden away.
