I wrenched my gaze from the ring to Rafe. “You want to marry me?”

His mouth curled at the corner. “It’s not every day you find a woman who takes such pleasure in publicly mortifying you.”

Laughter, joy, bliss, excitement, fear, excitement, fear . . . it all rushed through me in a tidal wave. But the excitement and joy and bliss and all the good stuff won out. “I want to spend the rest of my life publicly mortifying you.”

He raised his eyebrows. “Is that a yes?”

I nodded and opened my mouth to verbalize it, but Rafe hauled me into his arms to kiss me. The peanut butter jar got crushed between us as I laughed. I broke the kiss with a “Watch the ring!”

Looking down, I saw it thankfully was still sitting on top.

“You like it?” he murmured in my ear, still holding me close.

“It’s perfect. Though we can’t let it sink any farther in there or we’ll have to empty the whole jar.”

“Well . . .” Rafe kissed his way up my neck to my ear. “We could empty it out on the bedsheets.” His voice lowered as he whispered, “I remember a certain fantasy about licking the stuff off your nipples.”

And now I was turned on.

I stiffened and pushed him back. “Yup, let the ring sink.” I put the lid back on tight and grabbed Rafe’s hand. “Let’s go.”

Eyes alight with laughter, he gestured to the line. “What about the job?”

“I have other duties to perform this afternoon.”

“Lucky bastard,” the guy behind us muttered, and I snickered, realizing I’d been loud.

Rafe shook his head and wrapped his arm around me. “Let’s go, wife.”

“Fiancée,” I corrected him.

“That’s just a formality.”

I snorted, holding tight to my jar and my soon-to-be husband.

Star Shine Meadows, fiancée-soon-to-be-wife.

Now that was a title I never thought I’d have.

However, I’d realized this past year that life had a way of giving you gifts you never wanted because you never knew you needed them. Like there was a fate out there plotting to make your life great, if you’d only stop and pay attention to its moves.

That was the way I liked to look at it.

Rafe would say there was a fate out there plotting to make your life shitty, and you had to stop and pay attention to its moves so you could countermove.

But that was okay. That was why he needed me in his life, and vice versa.

He really was the peanut butter to my jelly.
