"Come here."

She ignores me. Naturally.

I growl and scoop her up into my arms, before dropping down onto the couch in her place. She lands in my lap with a little huff of offended outrage. She doesn't try to escape, though. We both know she's right where she wants to be.

"Taking care of you isn't trouble, Scarlett." I tilt her head back until her eyes meet mine. "Worrying about you isn't an inconvenience. Spending time with you isn't a hassle. You didn't do a goddamn thing wrong. I'm right where I want to be."

"I'm scared, Finn," she whispers.

"You think I don't know that?" I press my forehead to hers. "I want to kill him for frightening you, pretty baby. Hearing the fear in your voice today killed me. Not knowing if I was going to get there in time…" I take a deep breath, pushing the thought away. Every damn time I think about it, I want to put my hands all over her, just to remind myself that she's here right now and that she's safe. I don't know how to be gentle when every instinct I have screams with the need to fuck and claim and possess until the beast inside is satisfied.

"That's not what I mean." She swallows. "I mean… I'm scared of this," she says. "Of you being here so much. I don't think it's a good idea."

"What the fuck?" I growl, eyes narrowed. Damn, that stings.

"I don't mean it like that," she cries quietly. "I love spending time with you! But it's different with you here."

"Explain, Scarlett."

"If you're here, you'll realize that I'm a mess." Her gaze lands on her lap, her shoulders bouncing in a distressed shrug. "And then maybe you'll decide you don't want to spend time with me at all."

I sit quietly for a moment, processing this, not just her statement but the loneliness behind it. My poor little bookworm hasn't been treated nearly as well as she should have been if she believes for a single second that spending time with her isn't a fucking gift beyond measure. For the first time in years, my life has light and color. I've laughed more since I met her than I've ever laughed. I've smiled more since I met her than I've ever smiled.

For the first time in my life, I know happiness. Not contentment or a general sense of well-being, but happiness that seeps into every damn cell and courses through every vein. If she's a mess, she's exactly the mess my life needed.

"Fuck that," I growl, tipping her over backward and laying her out on the couch. I follow her over, pinning her sweet curves to the couch beneath me. I stretch out on top of her, sinking into her, my forehead pressed to hers. "You're my goddamn mess, Scarlett. You hear me? You're mine."

"Finn," she whispers.

"I love you."

Her breath catches in her throat again, hitching like it did the other day in the bookstore.

"I'm in love with you."

Tears brim in her eyes, threatening to overflow.

"Be a mess, pretty baby," I whisper, pressing my lips to hers. "I'll adore every perfect piece of you regardless. I already adore every damn piece of you. God, Scarlett. I've been wild for you since the moment I set eyes on you. I've been stalking the damn bookstore like a crazy man because I can't stand not being near you."

"I don't like it much either," she admits.

"Yeah? You miss me when I'm not there?"

"Like crazy." Her throat works as she swallows, those beautiful, watery eyes meeting mine. "You were the only person I wanted today when I saw him outside, Finn. I called you because I needed you. Because I knew you would get to me. Because…because I love you."

Her confession washes through me like a healing wind, soothing all those raw places. Only it doesn't ease the ache any at all. If anything, it sends my need for her skyrocketing. She has me at a disadvantage here. I'm supposed to be the one unraveling her, and yet she just changed my whole world with three little words.

"Is your aunt a heavy sleeper, pretty baby?" I ask.

"She sleeps with a mask that has built-in headphones. Why?"

I press my erection against her belly.

"Oh," she whispers, shivering in delight.

"I'm claiming what belongs to me tonight, pretty baby. And I want to hear you moaning my name while I'm doing it," I whisper against her lips. "But if you get too loud, I'll gag you."

"Finn," she moans.

I'm writing thank you cards to the authors she's had me reading. It's like they gave me cheat codes to her darkest desires and secret fantasies. And I've been a damn good student my entire life.

I brush my lips against hers in a soft kiss of promise, and then climb to my feet, pulling her up into my arms. Carrying her up the stairs to her room knowing that I'll be inside of her soon, fucking my kid into her, is a whole new kind of perfect.
