“Mom can choose everything. She was the one who wanted to organize everything. I don’t care.” This wedding was for her mother, not for her.

There was a loud honk from outside.

“That’s Petal,” Rosalie said.

“Where are you going?” Kim asked.

“To work.”

“Oh, you work?”

“At the diner, six days a week.” She kissed her mom’s cheek.

“I think it would be wise of you to hand in your letter of resignation. You won’t be needing that job anymore.”

“Not happening. There’s not a lot of work around, and I like my job.”

“Honey, you hate it.”

“I’m not stopping my job,” Rosalie said.

“Will you be telling Petal?” Gabrielle asked.

She stopped at the door. Myth stood by the front door, staring at her.

“Yes, I’ll tell her.”

“She’ll make a lovely bridesmaid.”

Rosalie had heard enough. When she reached for the front door, Myth held onto the door handle, stopping her from touching it.

“Get out of my way.”

“You will pay for everything, I hope you know that,” Myth said.

She turned to look at him. “You think I’m not paying now? Stay the fuck away from my mother, I mean it. Do whatever the hell you want to me, but you treat her like a fucking princess.”

Rosalie had surprised him and she used his distraction to pull open the door. Stepping out into the morning sun, she rushed toward her friend’s car.

“Have you seen the forecast?” Petal tutted. “I’m going to need to put my car in the shop to fix the freaking roof.”

She chuckled. “You knew that was going to happen anyway.”

“Yeah, but I was hoping it would be summer every single day. A girl’s got to have dreams, and is your skirt shorter?”

“Yeah, I think it’s been shrunk in the wash. Mom has promised to make me an exact replica as soon as she finds the fabric.”

“Al won’t go for that. I think he tries to swap our uniforms for shorter and tighter ones.” Petal wrinkled her nose. “Dirty perv.”

Rosalie laughed and they pulled away from the drive.

“So, whose car?”

“The car?”

“You know, the sexy car in the driveway.”

“Oh, a friend of Mom’s.”

“Your mom has friends?”

“She does.” Although Gabrielle never allowed anyone to get too close. The one time she did, it had ended in disaster. “What music are we listening to today?”

“No, don’t even think about it, you’re going to tell me what the hell is going on. I know you, Rose Barlowe, we’ve been friends for a long time. What the hell is going on with you?”

“Nothing.”

“Cut the crap, I’m not going to be upset that you completely ditched me and my MC party idea, and yet, there’s a bike in the driveway—”

“It was my dad,” Rosalie said.

“Wait, your dad, I thought your dad rarely came around, if at all.”

“He didn’t, he doesn’t.” She shrugged. “But he came then, and well, shit happened.”

“What kind of shit?”

She didn’t want to get Petal involved but now she saw no way out of it. So, she told Petal everything, her best friend in the world, the person who always had her back and had been there when she needed someone. Well, not quite everything. She left out the part of the past between her parents, and the fact Colt attempted to strangle her, oh, and the joy of being smacked in the mouth.

There was a slight bruise at the corner of her lips, nothing too obvious. She’d been able to cover it up with some foundation, which she never wore. She’d watched her mother apply it a couple of times.

“Holy fucking shit balls. Then you have a piece of shit friend constantly texting you. Now I feel like shit. So you have to marry this piece of crap?” Petal asked.

“Yes, and the lady who owns the sexy car, she’s the mother of the son I’m going to marry. Yay. She’s at home with my mom right now, organizing everything.”

“You’re letting your mom have that dream wedding she’s been talking about for years, right?”

“That’s the plan. That is what I hope. I know my mom has always wanted to do something special for me like that. This is her chance.” She shrugged.

Petal had pulled up to the back of the diner. They weren’t allowed to park in the main lot as that was for the customers.

“Well, I have to say holy shit because I figured you’d gotten yourself a hot man.”

Rosalie shrugged. “Technically, I’ve gotten myself a man, but there’s nothing great about it. I’m going to marry a total stranger. The enemy of my father’s club. Yay. It’s not going to be good.”

Petal sighed. “What can I do?”

“There’s nothing you can do. Just be my friend, help make me laugh when it goes insane. That kind of thing.”

“That’s exactly what I can do.” Petal winked at her. “Come on, we better go in before Al docks our wages for just sitting on his territory.”
