“I had an inkling,” Warden said.

“And you still went through with this wedding?” Colt asked.

“At the wedding, Gabrielle looked so scared. Now I know why,” Kim said. “That poor woman. To be ignored. To run to the police, wanting help, only to be handed to that … bastard.”

Colt didn’t turn to look at his mother, but kept his focus on his father.

“We all knew what kind of bastard Daemon was. I have not forgotten what he’s capable of.”

“But you still find it in your heart to drink with him.”

Warden grabbed the lapel of his jacket and brought him in close. “I suggest you be very careful about the shit you’re saying to me, son. Before I forget that you’re my blood and I wipe the floor with you, do you understand?”

Colt wasn’t afraid, but he had pushed too far.

“No fighting,” Kim said. “This is what he wants, don’t you see that?”

“I see everything, Kim,” Warden said. “Like I said when this marriage was first negotiated. The rumor surrounding Rosalie and Gabrielle had always been far-fetched. One of the rumors was that Gabrielle was his sister, that he loved. Another was his mother. Then of course, there was the rumor that Daemon had raped a civilian, a young woman, and kept her. She couldn’t leave. After meeting Rosalie and then Gabrielle, I figured the true rumor was the latter one.”

Colt ran a hand down his face. “What the fuck are we supposed to do? He’s clearly doing something to threaten Rosalie.”

“She is holding up her end of the bargain in getting pregnant?” Warden asked.

“Yes.”

“Then you need to find out what Rosalie knows or at least what Daemon has agreed to make her comply. The Evil Fuckers MC is up to something. I’m certain of it. I also believe whatever is happening is tied to Gabrielle and Rosalie. You’ll need to get close to her.”

“How?” Colt asked. “She hates my guts and she believes I can’t stand her.”

“Son, don’t be dense,” Kim said.

He turned to his mother who had actual tears in her eyes. “You and I both know that Rosalie is an attractive woman. You need to get your head out of your ass and realize that she’s nothing like her father. She is doing everything to protect her mother, and that is something you can admire, not hate.” Kim sighed. “I hate this.”

“Invite them over for dinner,” Warden said.

“You can’t be serious?”

“I’m being serious, and this is an order, Colt. You will take care of Rosalie. She is the key to figuring out what Daemon is up to.”

“You do realize we’ve got a run in two weeks,” Colt said.

Warden’s nostrils flared. “I have already contacted our supplier and informed them it’s a dead end. I don’t believe Daemon will allow us safe passage. I saw them last night, Colt. The trick to finding out what your enemy is up to is to play dumb. Play happy family, and right now, you need Rosalie, because we can use her on our side,.”

Colt ran fingers through his hair and stepped out of his father’s office and house, going to his bike. There was no way he was going to be able to invite the two of them back on his bike, so he straddled his machine and headed straight to the clubhouse, to change for the car.

Ox, Myth, Dirty, and Crow were sitting on the wall, smoking.

“What’s happening?” Ox asked, calling him over.

“I’m going to invite Gabrielle and Rosalie over for dinner.”

Myth gave a whistle. “Is her pussy becoming too hard for you to turn down?”

“Shut the fuck up.” Colt didn’t want to talk about Rosalie’s pussy. He’d not told any of the guys that she used lubrication to make it easier for him, because she wasn’t even turned on by him.

Ox jumped off the wall and rushed over to the car. “Is anyone invited to lunch?”

Kim’s Sunday lunches were a treat. Most of the guys loved them and would find any reason possible to get an invite, even if it meant attempting to locate an item around the clubhouse they thought Kim might need. It was usually entertaining to see.

“You’d have to call the folks.”

Ox did an air fist pump. From the number of pizza boxes, the guys were ready for a hot home-cooked meal.

“Are you okay, Colt?” Ox asked.

“I’m fine.”

He wasn’t going to tell any of the other guys about Gabrielle. She didn’t need other people to know her business.

Turning over the ignition of the car, it didn’t purr to life or give him any kind of thrills like his bike did. He hated driving the car, but this was necessary. Colt pulled out of the parking lot and headed toward Gabrielle’s house. He didn’t take any time noticing the scenery. In his mind, Rosalie’s revelation Friday night still played in his mind. During Saturday, he’d tried to ignore it, but he’d known it wasn’t a lie. He had no choice but to wait to talk to his father. Now, he didn’t know what to fucking do.
