The Breeding Farm

I stood shell-shocked. Did I just hear the alpha correctly?

“What breeding farm? What are you talking about?” I demanded, folding my arms across my chest. I slowly began to back away from him. I had to keep him talking somehow. Jay had jumped out the window with a silver spear in his shoulder, and I had no idea if he was okay or not with a pack of wolves also chasing him. I was in the room with one guard and Alpha Kortan who was staring at me with his hawkish eyes.

“Do you remember when I told you that a female werewolf can only have one child in their lifetime?”

“Yes…”

“My late grandfather started a wonderful farm to breed beautiful human women like yourself,” he said, smiling. The smile didn’t quite reach his eyes.

“There’s plenty of other women everywhere,” I said, my throat constricting with fear and adrenaline. “Why me?”

“We want you,” said Alpha Kortan. “You’ll be a great addition to the farm.”

“I can’t have children,” I said. A last-ditch attempt to save my life. My life started flashing before my eyes. I would be on the news, and my family would be so devastated. I pictured them crying.

“Stop lying.”

“I’m not,” I said, keeping eye contact with him. His jaw twitched as if in unease. Then…

“Get her, Darian,” he finally ordered the guard.

I took several deep breaths so I could think clearly. I could see from the side of my eye that the door wasn’t guarded anymore. The guard stood next to the window blocking me from jumping out after Jay. He stalked in my direction.

I began running towards the door.

I didn’t make it too far before a rag was thrown over my head.

Darkness overcame my vision, and the smell of ammonia filled my nose. I threw my hands up, trying to pull the rag off my face, but my hands met muscled hands that were relentless. I tried holding my breath to block the smell, but after a couple of seconds, my eyes started to close

Then all I saw was black.

As I came to, I heard feminine voices talking all around me. Their voices sounded panicked.

My eyes shot open.

I saw that I was on a bus, and there were women in every seat, talking to each other with fear in their eyes.

It was daytime, and the sun outside beat down on me from the window.

I realized my shoulder was warm and had fallen asleep at the awkward angle I was in. A girl who looked to be in her twenties sat next to me, sitting petrified as she stared out the window. There was excessive glitter in her hair, and she had green eyeshadow smeared all over her eyelids.

The bus was moving fast over the gravel, jostling everyone around.

I quickly sat up and looked out the window. We were driving past large desolate areas of land. I turned back to the girl next to me.

“Where are we? What’s going on?” I asked.

“I don’t know,” she whispered without looking at me. “The werewolves. I can’t believe I saw a werewolf.”

“Yeah, they exist,” I said, not surprised at all. I remembered the alpha talking about the breeding farm and wondered if that was where we were going next.

I had to get out of here.

Grabbing the seat in front of me, I used it to balance myself as I stood up. My legs nearly gave out, so I dropped back into the chair.

The bus was moving way too fast for me to try and run to the exit.

I felt weak and tired. I grabbed my aching head, trying to make sense of all this. Where was Jay? Was he even still alive? What the hell was going to happen to me now? I always thought the alpha was such a good guy, but damn, was I mistaken.

I wiped the sweat from my forehead. It was sweltering in this shabby bus.

As the bus drove over major potholes, I grabbed the seat in front of me. As I tried to gather my thoughts, I looked around at the women on the bus. They mostly had fear in their eyes, unsure of where they were being taken to.

The fear was almost palpable.

“You’ve seen a werewolf before?” asked the girl next to me.

“Yes,” I said. “How did you end up here?”

“I’m a dancer at a club, and this large blond guy was so into me. We had a lot of fun and drinks,” she began. “When I went to his place, he shape-shifted into a monster. Into a werewolf. Obviously, I thought I was going crazy. Then, he magically shifted back into a man and said I’d never see my family again. I freaked out and started screaming. That was the last thing I remembered until I woke up here.”
