“Really, Mel. We both have lost a lot, but I never worried about who would stick with me. I was young. I knew you and Dad would be here. You were older, so it was different. A boy stole your heart, but you never think you’re good enough.” I pick the book up again. “You might not be all into numbers like Dad and me, but your mind is sprinkled with pixie dust, and I think Easton made you believe in yourself.”

“You read it.” She takes the book from me.

“I remember Easton. Not a ton, but I do recall how he looked at you. Called you his Neverland.” I tap the book with my finger. “The hero in this book would do anything for the heroine. It wouldn’t matter where she came from.”

I know she believes that Easton would want nothing to do with her. He came from a very wealthy, prominent family. Our father’s name is now well known in that world. He stole a lot of money. I’d guess that some of it would have been from Easton’s family too. It’s why we’re all in hiding. My father turned over the other men working with him. It is two of those people that likely want my dad dead and gone. We could end up being collateral damage.

“You might be right,” she agrees. “But sometimes you have to let people go because you’ll only hold yourself and them back. I saw the engagement—”

“Let’s go bust that shit up!” Would Easton really do that to her? I may have read too many romance stories. What, is he supposed to wait forever?

“I’m not going to ruin some woman’s wedding.” Her eyes grow glassy.

“He was yours first.”

“He was the only boy I ever kissed. It was on my birthday. I thought it was special and sweet that he was waiting for me to turn eighteen. Now he’s all…” She can’t bring herself to say it.

“You know what? Fuck him.” I grit my teeth.

“I tried.” A giggle slips past her lips.

“And he wouldn’t give?” That is surprising. He was obsessed with her.

“Nope.” She pops the P as she says it.

“If there is one thing I’m good at, it’s math, and this math doesn’t add up.”

“Love isn’t math.”

And that's how we’re different. When you have a problem, you only have to find the solution.

BOWEN

She is full of all kinds of surprises. I knew there was something different about my girl. I just had no idea my curvy little bombshell could also look like the adorable girl next door. When she stepped out of her home, I had to do a double-take.

She’d been in a pair of jeans that molded to her ass. It was paired with a white shirt that had a grumpy-looking cat on it. Her straight hair was full of curls, and black, round-framed glasses sat perched on her nose. Her curls were piled on top of her head in a clip. Every so often she’d have to brush a few back that fell into her face as she walked with her head down trying to read, and almost tripping more than a few times.

I thought she was stunning before, but this innocent look has taken my obsession with her to new heights. I’ll never be able to get the image of her walking out of that door out of my mind. I’m already picturing this sweet angel on her knees in front of me with my cock in her mouth while I brush those curls out of her face so I can see her eyes.

I reach down and adjust my erection in my pants, pushing those thoughts of her to the back of my mind. I have to focus.

I followed her home the other night. Once I got my hands on her address, I knew I could find out more about her. I left someone to keep watch while I went back home for the night. It might have been overkill, but I don’t give a shit. I feel this overwhelming need to protect her. I already made the mistake of letting her out of my sight once. I wouldn’t make it again. She’s endgame for me. She just doesn’t know it yet.

I came back the next morning after a restless night and waited. The pull to her is indescribable. Thankfully, I didn’t have to wait long until she left the house. I followed her as she got on the bus. She landed at a bookstore before she once again bolted back home in a hurry. That’s the last I saw of her. She hasn’t left the house again, but I’m sure it’s only a matter of time.

When my phone starts to ring, I quickly answer like an eager schoolboy. What is this wisp of a girl doing to me? No one would ever recognize the man I’ve become over the last week.
