She tried to avoid the club, but she missed Storm, and Rose, and Sarah. There were several other club women she missed as well. They used to get together every week, where they would enjoy some cocktails and retell stories of their husbands. She felt like she belonged.

“Hey, sweetheart,” Storm said, invading her thoughts.

“Storm.” She smiled at her mother-in-law, even though she should be an ex, along with Bolt, but he refused to sign the damn papers. She wanted a clean break.

Storm pulled her in for a hug.

Rose, Sarah, Ruth, and a couple of the club women were there. Morwenna didn’t like to refer to them as whores or sluts, even though that is what the men always called them. They used them, but were never truly nice to them. Bolt had told her that was so they didn’t get the wrong idea and think they could be an “old lady.” Their place was to be passed around to the men who wanted them. It was a cold life, but they always seemed happy to do it. She never liked it.

Bolt had said he would never be with one of them, yet he was with Star and probably more than one time. She was tired of thinking about it. She just wanted all of this to be over, and she didn’t know what she was supposed to do with the way she was feeling.

“How are you doing?” Storm asked.

“I’m doing good, actually. Yeah, the blog is going really well.” The past year she just threw herself into her work. It was hard not to want to go and help at the garage. She’d created a system, and now someone else worked there. She now went to a completely different town to get her car serviced, as did her parents. “How is everything going with you?” she asked, trying to be polite.

In the past year, she had declined many of the old ladies’ get-togethers. She didn’t think it was appropriate, seeing as she was trying to not be an old lady. Bolt was just being a pain in the ass.

“We’re missing you,” Storm said. “I wasn’t sure if you’d come to this fair, but now that you are here, we will have some fun. Come on.”

Before she could argue with the woman, her hand was pulled through her own, and Morwenna smiled. Rather than fight Storm, she decided to go with the flow and follow the other old ladies as they made their way through the fair.

They played some of the fighting games. Many of the old ladies were not quite adept at squirting water into a scary clown’s mouth, but seeing as her dad taught her to shoot when she was younger, she was quite able. Filling up that mouth, she won a stuffed bear, which she stuck under her arm. A couple of the women earned a goldfish. Others won tiny toys. It was a lot of fun, and for a short time, she was able to forget about what happened

They were her family, and rather than make excuses, she joined them at the burger stand. Looking across the fair as Storm ordered, Morwenna watched Bolt as he crouched on the ground in front of Star’s five-year-old son. Kyle was the kid’s name, and she’d taken care of him a few times. He was a sweet kid. There was always something strange about him.

“Morwenna, honey, would you just grab me a twenty out of my purse?” Storm said.

Reaching into her mother-in-law’s bag, she grabbed her purse, opened it, and pulled out a twenty. However, as she was about to close it, a picture of her and Bolt from twenty years ago captured her attention.

She and Bolt had been inseparable their whole lives. There was a time her mother and Storm were best friends, even though Gus was not a big fan of the Evil Dwellers MC, or at least that was what she heard. It was strange, as Gus and Maverick also had some kind of friendship. It must have been a strong one, because she and Bolt spent so much time together. Looking at the picture, she glanced up, then back down.

“Morwenna, do you want anything to eat?” Storm asked.

She quickly closed the purse and shoved it back into Storm’s bag. “You know, no, I’ve got to go to the bathroom. I’ll be back soon.” She handed Storm her bag and smiled at the other women, heading in the direction of the bathroom. The moment she was out of eyesight, she veered away from the bathroom, crossing the field to get as far away from the fair as possible

The tears should have stopped by now. She didn’t need to keep crying, yet the tears kept coming. She swiped at her eyes, even as she made it out to one of the large fields with a bunch of wildflowers, and she sat down.
