Thank you, God! Now, if you could, get me out of this alive and unscathed, please.
A large hand wrapped around my upper arm tightly, and I was suddenly being pulled along beside Hale, who had much longer legs, forcing need to jog to keep up or have my arm jerked out of its socket. He wasn’t hiding the fact that he was manhandling me. No one around seemed to notice or care. If I screamed, I doubted it would do much good. They all were in on this together.
But why me? I was old. It made no sense. Did he think I was younger because of Pooky? Or had Pooky done something and they thought I was involved with him?
I opened my mouth to tell him he was wrong and closed it again. I had a phone. I’d send an SOS. Until then, I needed to keep this man from snapping.
Twelve
Hale
“Can I use the restroom?” Bay asked hesitantly as she stared at the seat I had pointed at her to sit in.
I’d like to tell her no just to cause her discomfort, but I also didn’t want her pissing on the leather. Grabbing her arm again, I led her over to the restroom door and all but shoved her inside before letting go of her arm. She was terrified, as well she should be. I didn’t feel sorry for her. She knew who I was, who we were. He’d have told her by now. She might have even known since the night on the plane. I didn’t like being made a fool of, and this one had almost done just that.
The click of the lock would have been amusing if I wasn’t so fucking livid. Did she think locking herself in the toilet was going to save her? We were taking off regardless, and she’d be answering to Linc soon enough. As would I, for not seeing through her sooner. Since there was no flight attendant this time, I went to make my own drink at the bar. At least I could save face by saying I had stalked her because I was onto her. Not because I’d been concerned for her safety. Hell, the little shit I’d scared off probably had some connection to the son of a bitch she was seeing. Why hadn’t I thought to look into that?
My phone went off, and I slid it out of my pocket and held it to my ear with my shoulder while I poured my drink.
“Yeah?”
“Where is your burner?” Bane asked.
Fuck. I’d left it in the Escalade.
“I’ll have Opal get it. Left it in the vehicle.”
“No, it’s on the plane with you, and an SOS was just sent from it.”
I stopped pouring and set the whiskey bottle down. My gaze swung to the closed restroom door.
“I see,” I muttered.
“Who has it if you don’t?”
The grinding of my teeth was audible. That little sneaky bitch. She’d taken my goddamn burner.
“I do,” I said through my clenched teeth. “Or I will in a moment.”
“Linc just called and said you’ve got some woman who is attached to Harland Allen with you,” Bane said.
“Yeah, and she’s sneakier than I realized. That’ll be the last time she gets something by me,” I told him.
“You’re aware Harland is married? His father-in-law is the one who put him in his current position and has the power to take it away from him. Are you sure this woman is connected to him?”
I was fucking positive. “I’ll send you the background check Wilder sent me on her. It’s all there.”
“Ah, all right. Keep her from causing any more trouble. I’ve had the phone service killed on the burner, but she may try the damn SOS again. That takes a little more work to shut down. And you’d better check her out for any tracking or bugs.”
I’d not thought of that. Fuck. She was making me forget shit. My anger at being blindsided by a female. Another reason to hate the bitch.
“I got this,” I assured him, ending the call and slamming my glass down on the counter before stalking over to take the emergency release tool from the drawer.
I was going to have to watch her more carefully.
With a quick slip into the latch, the lock slid open, and I heard her loud gasp as I jerked open the door. She wasn’t using the toilet, but I’d already suspected that. Instead, she was trying to shove the phone in her pocket, unsuccessfully.
“Wh-what are you doing?” she squeaked, backing up against the wall, trying to get away from me.
“Getting my phone,” I replied.
I closed in on her and took it from her pocket while she stared up at me, wide-eyed.
“You won’t get away with this,” she told me with a sudden fierceness in her expression.
I just laughed. Yeah, darlin’, I will.
