His hours at work seemed to drag, and his time with Lark never felt like enough. He took her out nearly every night. Sometimes they went to the movies, where he held her hand against her thigh or draped his arm around her shoulders. He preferred taking her to dinner though, where they could talk and laugh and learn everything about each other.

He met with the women two more times in Little Cakes to help them improve their self-defense skills, including how to properly carry and use pepper spray. They were all learning, and it made not just Wyatt but all the other men feel like their Littles would be safer.

With every passing day, Wyatt grew more and more certain Lark was his. His Little girl. His perfect someone. He couldn’t wait to close on his house in a few days and really start turning it into a home. He wanted Lark there every step of the way, helping him choose the décor and furniture, especially for the nursery.

For the most part, Lark seemed as excited and happy as Wyatt was. She opened up to him more every day. She never turned him down for a date, and she responded to every text and call eagerly. Her face lit up when he picked her up at her house.

There was just one thing that seemed slightly concerning and gave Wyatt pause. Lark always grew fidgety, nervous, and quiet when he brought her home. Sometimes, it seemed like she didn’t want him to come inside. He often kissed her at the door until her legs gave out.

He thought she was into him sexually because she ended up panting and flushed, but somehow, he got the feeling she didn’t want him to enter her home.

It didn’t make much sense. He’d been in her home many times. He’d wandered around inside while she’d finished getting ready on several occasions. He’d even been in her bedroom and seen her collection of Eeyores. It was impressive. Not just a shelf. A full bookcase of all kinds of Eeyores in all sizes.

He loved it. But what he loved more was the giant, fluffy, well-loved Eeyore that sat in the middle of her bed as if waiting for her to return each night and snuggle with him.

Wyatt had spent a lot of time visualizing all these stuffies and more moving into that blue room attached to the master bedroom in the house he already thought of as theirs. Not just his.

He hadn’t mentioned his plans for the future yet, but he intended to soon. He didn’t relish the idea of spending even one night in that new house without her. It felt like as soon as he closed on it, she should also join him. And yet, he hadn’t spoken of that plan with her.

Why? Because something held him back. And that something had everything to do with the fact that he’d only gotten about halfway to second base with Lark.

He didn’t mind at all. He wasn’t the sort of man who got so frustrated he couldn’t be patient when it came to sex, nor would he ever pressure a woman to take the next step if she wasn’t ready. But he couldn’t figure out what held Lark back. It didn’t match with her eagerness to be with him and the way she passionately kissed him.

He needed to confront her, and he intended to tonight. It was time to lay his cards on the table and make sure she was on the same page. A part of him was nervous and worried. He would be devastated if she didn’t have the same dream as him.

Tonight, they were doing something different. By design. Wyatt had suggested they stay in for pizza and a movie. He’d already picked up the pizza and was pulling into her driveway. He took a deep breath and opened his car door, reaching for the pizza before climbing out of the car.

Lark had been quieter than usual today. Ever since he’d made this suggestion last night, her texts had been briefer. The two times he’d called her today, she’d kept their conversation brief, saying she was in a hurry to meet a client.

He understood her work schedule. He would always need to be flexible. Realtors worked odd hours and weekends. So did cops. It would always be a challenge making their schedules match, but he was certain they’d make it work.

He made his way to the door and knocked, hating the nervous feeling inside him.

Lark opened the door moments later, and he immediately knew he was right to be concerned. Instead of her usual excited greeting, she wore the tentative smile he’d often seen when he dropped her off.

Something about having him in her home stressed her out. It was making him panic. “Hey, kitten,” he said as she pulled the door open wide and stepped back to let him in.
