“I did.”

She widened her eyes. “Like what?”

“Don’t worry. I’ll teach you that and more.”

She parted her lips.

“Would you like that?”

She turned away. “I. . .umm. . .I have to focus on getting my daughter back and that means all of my attention needs to be on the Boto Brothers.”

“We’ll focus on them in the morning. For now, there are other things we should focus on.”

She quirked her brows. “What other things?”

“I have questions.”

“What questions could you have? You’ve been on this earth longer than me.”

“Still, I’ve never seen anyone like you.” I ran my fingers through her silver dreadlocks. “Why is your hair silver?”

“My father’s hair is silver.”

“And is he a Yumboe fairy?”

“He is.”

“Never have I seen a Yumboe with silver hair.”

“Because the ones with royal blood rarely leave the confines of their kingdoms.”

“But you left.”

“I wasn’t supposed to.” She raised her hand and touched the hardness of my chest. Her fingers landed on a thick white scar near my stomach. “I thought incubi can heal everything.”

“Not Adae’s sword. I don’t know what it is made of but once it touched me, everything burned. I thought I’d died. When I woke up in his dungeon, I vowed that his sword would never touch me again.”

“And did it?”

“Never again.”

She traced the scar with her finger. “How are you always able to escape his dungeons?”

“I have no will to remain trapped.”

She slipped her hands up to my pecs.

My body hummed. “So, you’re royalty?”

“Not anymore.”

“Has your kingdom been dissolved?”

“No. My father—the king—kicked me out of our land.”

“Due to the vampire?”

“And my daughter.” Her bottom lip quivered. “When the vampires crept upon us during a moonlit feast, I was so captivated. Many of my cousins and friends raced away. I stayed.”

I imagined those evil creatures surrounding her, thirsty and greedy to put their fangs in her soft skin. “Did they bite you?”

She shook her head. “They came bearing gifts. Music that I’d never heard of. Sweets that I’d never tasted. Wine that made me giggle and float a few inches from the ground.”

I frowned. “And what did they want?”

“Permission to live in the village near our hills.”

“In other words, to prey on the humans in the villages. To feed and fuck them until the entire population either died or shifted into more vampires.”

“That was what my father feared.”

“So the king said no?”

“And the vampires were mad. They captured and took me away, but they didn’t get far.”

“Why not?”

“I kicked their asses.”

I grinned. “How many vampires?”

“Seven.”

I chuckled. “Tell me more.”

“My royal bloodline flows within my family for a reason, and it’s not to sit on a throne and rule.”

“Then, what is it?”

“Our sole purpose is to kill any threat to our tribe. Thus, we’re fast and full of great power.”

“Once you killed them. What happened next?”

“I dragged one of the vampires back as a prisoner.”

“Why didn’t you kill him?”

“Something wouldn’t let me. My heart. My mind. Even my hand wouldn’t slam my dagger down into his chest.”

Intrigued, I leaned back. “You have a dagger that can kill vampires?”

“I did.” She sighed. “I think my magic knew that this vampire was who I would breed with one day. When I brought him into our castle, all were in uproar.”

“I can understand that.”

“But, I couldn’t stop myself. I kept him in my bedroom, against the guards’ and my parents’ pleas. They thought I’d become cursed with madness.”

“His blood called to you.”

“Something did.” She looked away in shame. “He was inside of me the first night, taking away my virginity. I pretty much begged him too. And something. . .odd happened when we had sex.”

“What?”

“His blood soared into me, entering me and. . .changing me.”

I imagined this moment in my head and hated the idea of him touching her.

“The next night, my people cast the vampire and me out. My father believed that I was too tainted to rule. My mother proclaimed in front of everyone that my children would never be heirs either. All were to turn the other way if they saw me, and never communicate with me again.”

I frowned. “What is your husband’s name?”

“I don’t say it. He’s only a vampire to me now.” She left my hold and sat up in bed, covering her breasts with her arms. “I traveled with the vampire to Europe. He put a wig on my head to hide my ears. He taught me how to sneak around in the shadows, how to be a better fighter, how to get human money, and how to shoot guns.”

For some reason, I despised the vampire.

“He bit me a lot, so much that one day I woke up with fangs that dripped with this clear liquid. I thought I’d become a vampire.” She sighed. “But I didn’t burn in the sun like him. Plus, I could go to holy, sacred spaces. I could even see myself in the mirror.”
