The blinds are drawn, the lights are out, and the room is sheltered in complete darkness.

King is already in the process of yanking the white cloth off his cart and exposing the treasure beneath, and as the door falls shut behind me, movement across the room has a soft gasp sailing from my chest. Carver sits in the darkness, somehow already here and looking as though he’s been waiting a lifetime for us to show up. He stands and crosses to King’s cart, scanning through the weapons and loading his tactical belt with everything he could possibly need.

King, Grayson, and I start pulling off our stupid disguises, and as my big coat falls to the floor, a soft knock sounds at the door.

King steps toward it, peering through the closed blinds before gripping the door handle and opening it. Cruz barrels in out of breath and catches himself against the table. “Fuck, do you have any idea how many steps it takes to get to the thirty-fourth floor?”

A laugh pulls out of me, realizing that in order to have time to cut the power and make it all the way up here at the same time that we did, he would have had to run … fast.

Grayson scoffs, more than amused by Cruz’s lack of fitness, which is saying a lot because Cruz is one of the fittest guys I know. “Shit, bro. Guess it’s time to get back on the treadmill, huh?”

“Fuck off,” Cruz laughs, straightening as he does his best to act like he was just exaggerating. “I’m fine. I could whip all your asses in a race.”

Carver grunts to himself, still loading up on weapons, and as he finds the specific gun they’d packed for me, shit gets real. The boys fall into silence and we get busy loading up. It takes us two minutes, and the more weapons I attach to my body, the more my nerves come alive.

It’s like preparing for a war that you’re not sure you’re going to win, but we’ve got this. It’ll be an ambush with the knowledge of complete freedom keeping me going.

There’s no backing out now.

Worst case scenario, we destroy an empty room, but on the other hand, we could take out Paris and never have to fear for our lives again, never have to fear for our people, family, or friends. We would never grieve horrendous losses, and we’d never have to watch our backs so closely.

Fuck, I’m so worked up that I’m going to be pissed if she’s not here. I mean, it’s just my luck that she’s out doing her groceries right now. Hell, I never thought that I’d see the day where I would be annoyed not to see Paris Moustaff because, for the first time in my life, I want to see her more than ever before.

King grabs his cart as Grayson opens the door and peers down the hall. He holds up a hand, telling us to wait a moment, and then all too soon, it’s go time.

We rush out of the conference room and barrel down the hall toward the big black door with gold writing. Grayson sticks himself to the wall and reaches up, cutting the wires to the security camera and the second his hand comes back down, King pushes past him with the cart, grabbing everything he needs.

Explosives are wired to the door and I stand back, knowing that this could go wrong, but King is trained in this shit. He knows what he’s doing.

Grayson moves to block me from the explosion as Carver moves in closer to the door, his gun raised, ready to go. If Paris really is in there, she’s bound to have a guard stationed at this door 24/7 and Carver is going to make sure that the fucker doesn’t get a chance to fight back.

I bounce on my toes as King moves back, the detonator in his hand. “Ready?” he questions.

Everyone nods and I reach down to my hip, pulling a gun out of the holster, holding it tight and readying myself for Paris’ epic takedown. I breathe heavily, knowing that if there isn’t a guard on the other side of this door, it was all for nothing. But King doesn’t allow me the chance to think on it as he hits the button, sending the big door flying off its hinges and rocking back inside the penthouse emergency exit.

The sound echoes through the hallway and we only have mere seconds before people come rushing out, needing to know what the fuck is going down in here, but my hopes are that none of them are stupid enough to come in here. In a perfect world, they’ll all run for the fire escape and get the fuck out of here before they get themselves hurt.
