Blaze grunted. “We can take turns with her so she’s not alone. Jonah can take care of her at night. I can take her during the day while I’m at work, and you can take her in the evenings until Jonah is off,” he suggested.

I shrugged, looking at my best friend who looked a bit conflicted at the thought of passing his sister around like that. “It’s as good a suggestion as any,” I told him. “It means she won’t be by herself, so we can make sure she’s getting the help she needs so she can recover faster.”

John sighed. “She’s going to hate this.”

Blaze shrugged. “Doesn’t fucking matter. Her health is the most important.” He glared at the IV line. “Fucking can’t stand that a woman’s baby comes before her need for fucking pain medicine,” he growled.

I rolled my neck around on my shoulders, one hundred percent agreeing with him. Though this baby was mine, too, I was more concerned about Montana. The doctor hadn’t prescribed her anywhere near the dose she needed to function mostly normally. Any time she’d gotten up to go use the bathroom, she’d cried.

And Montana wasn’t a fucking crier.

But they were more concerned with a nonviable pregnancy.

God forbid anyone hurt the damn baby.

Montana slowly woke up, a groan leaving her lips when she tried to move. John was instantly at her side, helping her get more comfortable the best he could.

“Water,” she muttered.

I quickly grabbed the cup from the table beside her bed and held the straw at her lips, letting her drink some of it. Blaze slipped from the room, drawing her eyes to his back for a moment before she looked up at me.

“Tired?” she whispered.

I shook my head. “Just worried about you, baby girl. You feeling any better?”

She just shook her head. I dropped a kiss to the top of her head and straightened when the door opened again. Blaze stepped in, followed by her doctor. The doctor looked disgruntled, and knowing Blaze, he was the cause of it.

“You ready to go home, Montana?” the doctor asked her.

She frowned. “Home?”

He nodded. “Your insurance won’t cover any more of your stay. I, unfortunately, have to discharge you.”

Montana looked stupefied. I clenched my jaw. Blaze grabbed her hand, drawing her eyes to his. “We’ve got you, sweetheart,” he assured her, somehow soothing her, which I was grateful for. “My PA is currently looking for a live-in nurse for you.” When the fuck had he set that up? “You’ll be taken care of; I promise.”

I saw something dark pass through her eyes. She tried taking her hand from his, but he didn’t release his hold on her. John grunted. “Just bring her discharge papers so we can get her home,” he muttered.

The doctor nodded and cast Montana a smile she didn’t return. “Feel better, Montana. And come back if you notice any dizziness, fainting, or unusual swelling.”

I snorted. Unusual swelling.

Doc, I don’t know how to fucking tell you this, but her entire goddamn body is unusually swollen.

* * *

Montana whimpered as I gently laid her on my bed. She was wearing a baggy t-shirt dress that Blaze had picked up for her, and to make everything a bit more convenient and comfortable for her, she wasn’t wearing panties or a bra.

She and I were about to become extremely comfortable with each other tonight because if she had to take a piss, I had to hold her up. She was hurting too much to do it herself. And considering Blaze was still trying to find a live-in nurse he approved of, I was all she had at the moment.

I knew she hated being cared about like this, but she needed extra help—professional help.

“Bath,” she whispered, her jaw still too swollen to really say much. And all I could give her for pain was fucking Tylenol. It was all the doctor would prescribe her.

I wanted to go hunt him down and punch him in the face when the nurse came back with only that prescription.

I knew Montana had a headache from hell from her concussion, and add the pain coursing through her body? She was fucking miserable.

All because of a baby I’d put inside of her.

Never felt more like a douchebag in my entire life.

“Let me run you some water,” I told her.

I quickly moved to my bathroom and turned the water on in the tub, adding Epsom salt to it. I didn’t have bubble bath shit, but hopefully, the Epsom salt would soothe her body a little bit. It usually did mine after a long, hard day at work.

When I stepped back into the bedroom, her phone was vibrating, but she was ignoring it. Sighing, I grabbed it up, seeing Blaze’s name on the screen. I held it up. “You know if you don’t answer it, he’ll drive his ass over here,” I warned her.
