But the way he says baby makes me tremble, not in a good way, but in a way that reminds me he wants me back and he’s not going to just stop once this is over.

I look away and see Beckett watching us, his face hard and blank. He won’t meet my eyes. I look to Eve and her brows are raised as she watches Mateo and me. When she realizes I’m looking at her, she gives me a grin that tells me how much she’s enjoying this exchange. I roll my eyes and look back to Mateo who is continuing his story telling.

The meeting finishes up and I make my way into the kitchen. I prepared some food, knowing they’d all be here, and because I was bored as fuck and have nothing else to do. The money is on the backburner until this business with Rocco has been dealt with, then they’ll decide what they’re going to do with me. That should be an interesting conversation.

“That husband of yours is smoking hot,” Ramona says, walking into the kitchen followed by Eve.

“Trust me, he’s a bad, bad man,” I murmur, glancing at Mateo who is deep in conversation with one of his men. “He will have your head spinning right off your shoulders. The dude is messed up.”

“Maybe,” Eve says. “But my god he’s hot. And holy hell, he wants you bad.”

I grit my teeth. “Yes, well, he won’t be having me again.”

“Is there a reason why?” Ramona asks. “I mean, other than the obvious. He is into you, honey. Was he truly that bad of a husband?”

I exhale. “No, it’s not that. We just ... clash. We are no match for each other and the relationship was toxic. He is hot, and there were times I was certain I could never leave him, usually during an intense orgasm, but I didn’t love him. I just ... I don’t have feelings for him.”

“Fair enough,” Eve says. “Can’t fake feelings.”

No.

You can’t.

Hence why Beckett and I will never be.

“Tell me more about this fucking,” Ramona says, fanning herself. “It sounds intense.”

“Oh, it was intense,” I say. “The man never liked it basic, it was always crazy. Cuffing, gagging, rough sex, public sex, sex that made your head spin. He was into it, and he was good at it. He could drive me wild like nobody’s business.”

“Oh, god, are you sure you don’t want a few more rounds? What could it hurt?” Ramona grins, and I know she’s joking.

I laugh, too. “Well, now you mention it, I could use a few rounds.”

A throat clears and we both spin around to see Beckett leaning against the counter, his hip pressed against it. His arms are crossed over his broad chest and he’s staring at me with an expression I can’t quite read. “You been on a bike?”

I blink, not what I expected to come out of his mouth. Still, I answer him. “Yes, why?”

“Figure you want to get out of this fuckin’ warehouse, and we have some business on the coast.”

“A beach?” Ramona squeaks.

Beckett nods. “Yep, a beach. Long ride, overnighter. You up for it?”

Am I up for it?

I’d give an arm to get out of here right now. Of course I’m up for it.

“Um, yes,” I say, nodding enthusiastically. “I’m so in.”

“Oh god, this is going to be awesome,” Eve claps. “I’m going to find out deets from Riggs because I am so bloody there.”

Well.

This could be fun.

“Beckett, please.”

The pleading sound of a woman wakes me from my sleep. I sit up and rub my eyes, staring around the room, a little confused, a whole lot groggy. I shake my head a little as I come to and stare around the room. The yelling outside gets louder until I’m certain I’m listening to Becky pleading. Her voice is shaking as she cries and I stay very quiet as I climb out of bed and go to the door, so I can hear more clearly.

“It ain’t goin’ to work. Been thinkin’ about it for days now and there is no way around it. You’re never goin’ to fit into this life and there is no way I’ll fit into yours. We’re not compatible in any way and I don’t want to go through the drama when you leave your husband. We had fun, it was good, but it was never going to last forever. You know that.”

“No, Beckett, you’re wrong. You’re the only thing I enjoy, if I lose you ...”

“That’s the problem,” he interrupts her. “I am the only thing you enjoy and because of that you’re hangin’ on tight, but the fact is you got your own shit you need to sort out because what you feel for me is exaggerated by the pressure you have at home.”

“Don’t tell me how I feel,” she yells. “You have no idea how I feel, clearly, because if you did you wouldn’t be doing this. I thought we loved each other, had something good, now you’re saying we don’t?”
