It’s far-fetched, but if I have to protect them by getting them to back off, I will.

“Figured he worked out a way around our plan,” Hugh grunts. “Just means we have to figure out what orders he’s given and get rid of those people, too.”

“You can’t take out the entire cartel and think you’ll get away with it,” I point out. “I don’t know if you know this, but there are hundreds of them and they’re going to come straight at you. This plan is pointless, and it’ll never work.”

“Give us some time to talk about this,” Riggs interrupts, hand up. “We’ll be home tomorrow and will make contact with Mateo, sort it out.”

There is nothing to sort out.

It’s looking more and more like my choice has been made for me.

Even if the club finds out who has orders to hurt me if something happens to Rocco, they’re never going to be able to find every single person Rocco has spoken to. They’re risking all their lives putting an attack on the Cartel, and they know it. I don’t have an option here, the only way to free myself and the club, is to hand over Becky.

“Can I shower now?” I say, standing.

Riggs nods and I disappear into the shower where I quickly undress and stand under the warm water, letting it fall over me as I try to stop my mind from spinning. Does Beckett have any idea who Becky really is? Is Rocco telling the truth about her? What if it’s a lie, a trap? How the hell am I supposed to know if what he says is true, when I only have 48 hours to deliver her?

God dammit.

“Hey.”

I lift my head to see Beckett standing at the door, watching me. It’s strange how comfortable we are with each other, it’s like we’re one and the same, even though we’re not.

“It’s illegal to watch girls shower, you know,” I say, giving him some sass even though it feels strange.

“I’m certain you don’t mind,” he murmurs. “You good?”

“You’ve asked me that at least six times since we left the club.”

His eyes darken. “Well, it’s because I don’t believe it when you answer me.”

“I’m a bit shaken up, I guess I wasn’t expecting it.”

He takes a step in further. “Gotta know, Pop-Tart, did he say anything else to you?”

I exhale. “No, he didn’t.”

“I’m findin’ that hard to believe.”

“Of course you are, none of you trust me. You all act like I’m part of this, but the truth is I’m never going to be. I’m always just the prisoner.”

“You’re not a fuckin’ prisoner.”

“Aren’t I?” I laugh. “Really? Because if I wasn’t you’d all let me go but you don’t, you have a watch on me constantly. I bet tonight when you couldn’t find me, you all came charging out thinking I had done a runner.”

He doesn’t say anything, and I know I’m right, I just know it.

“Exactly,” I mutter. “You can leave now.”

He holds my gaze for a minute, and then he turns and walks out.

God dammit.

I don’t know where to go from here.

I honestly don’t.

SILENCE.

Uncomfortable silence.

Yet I have so many questions.

I want to ask Beckett more about Becky, I need to know more, anything, something. Something just to let me know she’s bad and I’m making the right choice. God, anything.

“How did you meet Becky again?” I ask, breaking the silence.

“Why are you askin’ about her?” Beckett looks to me, his eyes scanning my face.

There is only one bed, and we’re in it together.

“Because this silence is horrible, and I honestly can’t think of anything else to talk about right now that’s not going to lead back to Rocco. Do you have a question for me?”

He shakes his head. “Nah, I don’t.”

“Good, then we’ll talk about you, I can’t sit in this quiet anymore.”

“I met her through a friend.”

“Oh, a friend introduced you to a married woman?”

He glares at me.

“Keep your shirt on, big guy,” I mutter. “It’s a question.”

“I met her through a friend, but he didn’t introduce us. She was there with him, and we got to talkin’ and somehow it went from there. She was pretty into me, followin’ me around until I’d talk to her.”

Interesting, very interesting indeed.

“You don’t really seem like the kind of man that would catch her eye,” I point out.

“Nah, that’s what I thought, too. But she seemed interested and I thought she was beautiful so I took her up on her offer and it went from there.”

“Has she ever been to the club, or was it strictly sidelines?”

“Sidelines. She asked a lot to go to the club but I put my foot down, that was where it ended for me.”

I wonder if that quite possibly is what saved him.

If what Rocco says is true, then she would have wanted as much information as possible that she would have needed to go to the club to get. I do wonder how much she was actually able to send back, obviously not enough considering Rocco is now after her. It’s going to be a mission to learn as much as I can about her in two days, but I’m determined to be one hundred percent when I make my decision.
