“You said you took the pill.”

His voice isn’t accusing, he’s just stating a fact.

I’ve never heard him whisper before. Not about a single thing. But when he said that - he whispered.

“I did,” I croak. “I took it...maybe this is wrong, a hormonal reaction to the pill.”

He looks up at me. “Can you find out? Call the doctor. Find out.”

His voice is firm but not harsh. It’s certainly not the reaction I expected from him. I was sure he’d come in here, start screaming, yelling, and throwing things around. He’s scarily calm, and it’s freaking me out.

“I...” I shake my head. “I don’t know what to do.”

“Come on. We’re goin’ to see a doctor.”

He takes my arm and pulls me from the bathroom and down the hall, the stick still waving around in my hand. I shove it into my pants, not wanting the entire clubhouse to see the results, let alone judge me for them. My heart is racing, and my mind is spinning as I take every step, one foot in front of the other, just trying to move. Beckett leads me past a group of people, Riggs and Eve being part of that group.

Riggs steps out and stops us. “What’s goin’ on?”

“Gotta take Poppy to a doctor. She’s not well,” Beckett mutters.

My eyes meet Eve’s, and hers widen. She knows what’s going on. I’d guess she was the one who bought Beckett the test to begin with. It wouldn’t take a genius to figure out the results are not what we expected. Otherwise, I’d be back in that room, and everything would be super.

“I’ll come,” Eve says, stepping forward.

“What’s goin’ on?” Riggs demands, eyes scanning the three of us.

“I’m feeling off. I need to see a doctor,” I say, my voice shaky.

“How so?”

“My stomach, it’s killing me. Sharp, stabbing pains. Something is wrong.”

Riggs looks to Beckett. “You’re not about to do somethin’ stupid, are you?”

Beckett shakes his head. “I’m not. Just takin’ her to the doctor. Let Eve come if you’re worried.”

Riggs nods. “Eve, go with them.”

Eve quickly takes my hand. “We won’t be long.”

We walk out of the clubhouse and to Beckett’s truck. I slide in the back, not wanting to sit in the front, not wanting to see his face. I know there must be a thousand things running through his head right now, and all of them would be bad. He doesn’t want a baby, and he certainly doesn’t want one with me.

Eve reaches over and takes my hand as we drive. “Are you okay, honey?”

I look at her. “It was positive.”

“I figured.”

“We want to go see a doctor. Maybe it’s wrong. You know...the morning after pill and everything....”

She nods, but I can see that she doesn’t believe that for a second. Still, she’s supportive, and that’s what I need the most right now.

I have no idea how Beckett manages to get us into a doctor, but he makes a quiet call and drives directly to a location. Not a question asked. I guess he knows more people than he lets on.

We arrive at a house, which surprises me.

No clinic here.

Beckett gets out, and we follow. We all walk up to the front door, and it opens as soon as we clear the first step. A man in his fifties, possibly a touch younger, answers. He’s got greying hair, kind blue eyes, and he’s wearing a white coat. He looks very much like a doctor, but why the hell is he answering his door dressed like that? It’s just a house.

“Come in,” he says, stepping aside. “Nice to see you, Beckett.”

Beckett nods sharply at the man, and we all walk inside.

Once we’re in, I see that it isn’t just any old house but an entire clinic. The man runs his business from home. The house has been set up as a surgery, with a reception, waiting room, doctors’ offices, and private consult rooms. I didn’t know this existed, but I haven’t been here long, nor have I needed a doctor until now.

“Right this way.”

We walk past the reception and into a large room with a bed, a desk, and all the other doctory things you need to examine someone. I don’t know what any of it is called, and right now, I don’t care.

“How are you?”

The man is talking directly to Beckett.

“We’re not doin’ this,” Beckett mutters. “I only called because I had no choice.”

I blink slowly and glance at Eve, who is watching the two of them interact.

“Son...”

Wait.

Son?

This is Beckett’s father?

My eyes widen as I stare between the two of them. They don’t look alike, but honestly, that doesn’t mean shit.

“Not now,” Beckett growls.

“This is your dad?” I say softly.

Both men look at me, and their expressions are the same.

Oh, there it is.

“Yeah,” Beckett mutters. “This is my father, Edward.”

Edward nods. “Call me Eddie, and it’s lovely to meet you.”
