I touch it, smiling.

“He always had a thing for blondes, so I figured I would dress the part.”

“Lose the wig. I don’t have a thing for blondes, I have a thing for sassy little chocolate brunettes who can’t get enough of my cock.” He reaches forward and grabs the ears as I pull the wig off and let my hair fall free, then he puts the ears back on me. “There, now it’s perfect.” He grabs my boob, and I give him a strange look. “Just getting in my feels before we have to get out.” That makes me laugh.

“So you don’t plan to touch me again once we’re out of the car?” I pout.

“I plan to fuck you the minute I can, but it’s a bit hard with eyes on us.”

“I thought you liked it when people watched.”

“Correction. I like to watch, don’t get it mixed up. The only person I want watching you is me.”

I like the sound of that. A lot.

“Joey,” I say, leaning over. “Do you want kids one day?”

He gently sets his hand on my cheek. “No.”

I didn’t expect a yes, but I also wasn’t expecting a no.

“You aren’t pregnant, are you?”

“No, no, I’m on birth control. That will not be happening.”

“Good.”

I bite my lip.

“You’re great with kids, and you love your brother’s kids.”

“Because they’re not mine. Why would you choose to bring a kid into this world? I don’t, and I never plan to. That’s Keir’s choice. He knows what that means, that the kids will eventually take over for him. I would never allow that.”

“How can you say that when you’re a part of this world?” The car slows to a stop at Lucas’ bar. A few other cars are already here.

“This world is fucked-up. Marriage is where I draw the line.” He pauses and looks at me curiously, probably wondering why the hell I’m asking him this. Especially now. “Do you want kids?”

I don’t know how to answer that, so I say, “No.”

“Good, so we’re on the same path.” He opens his door. “I do love dogs, though. Let’s get some dogs.” He shuts the door, then walks around to mine and helps me out. When I’m standing, he pulls me to him. “You do like animals, yes? Tell me you aren’t a cat person…”

“I’m not a cat person,” I manage to reply, swallowing roughly. I need to enjoy this night and him.

“Phew, missed a bullet with that one.”

“You’re here,” Sailor says, walking over to us. She kisses Joey on the cheek before she brings me in for a hug. “Sister… I can call you that, right?”

I look to Joey, who just smirks.

“Sure.”

“Good. I’ve always wanted a sister. Now I have one.”

I don’t mention that I already have one as we go inside.

It’s dark with only a few family members and their partners and some other people I don’t know. Maybe twenty people in total, and most are at the bar. Chanel is dressed as Marilyn Monroe, and Lucas is behind her, his hand on her hip.

“I’m so sorry to hear about the bookstore.” I turn to see Merci, dressed as Catwoman, in a full leather suit and cat ears, and a man next to her who I’m guessing is supposed to be Batman.

“Same, thank you.”

“I heard they may have a lead on who might have done it.”

This is news to me.

I haven’t really been asking many questions since Becca’s death, being too preoccupied trying to get over the loss. So I haven’t really had time to process losing the store. The loss of her consumed me, and Joey let it.

“This is Chanel’s brother, Brody.” I smile and offer my hand, but my mind isn’t on him.

What is the lead? I want to know.

Excusing myself, I walk over to Joey, who is sitting at the bar with Keir, their heads leaned in as they speak quietly to one another. When I’m next to Joey, he reaches for me automatically and pulls me between his legs. Keir only stops for a second before he continues in a hushed voice.

“Piper searched his place, and she didn’t find much. Everything he had, he kept on his phone.” I have absolutely no idea what they’re talking about, and I don’t interrupt. Joey reaches for his drink and offers it to me. I take it, sipping, as I wait for them to finish speaking. Keir finally gets up and leaves after I’ve finished two drinks listening in on something I have no idea about.

“Do you want to dance?” he whispers in my ear before he leaves a soft kiss on my neck.

“Do you plan to fuck me in this bunny suit anytime soon?” I question him back, tilting my head as I look up at him.

“Every which way to Sunday.” He groans, lavishing another kiss behind my ear.
