And Cain seemed to like me best when I was fresh-faced and comfortable.

Or naked. Definitely naked.

We ate breakfast with Connor and Cass around the kitchen island. We were all quiet. Connor glared at Cain and Cain ignored him. Cass and I exchanged exasperated looks. It was uneventful.

Rumbling motors outside signaled a shift change. Con pulled Cassandra aside for a deep and almost X-rated kiss before telling her and the kids goodbye. Cain picked me up and practically inhaled my face, he kissed me so deeply. I wondered if he was checking my tonsils until he set me down and smirked at my brother.

He’d been making a point, apparently. I crossed my arms. I didn’t like to be used like that. But it was kind of funny at the same time.

The guys left together, practically shoving each other out of the way in their quest to go out the door first. Cass and I rolled our eyes and shook our heads. But we were smiling all the same. They might be acting stupid, but they looked pretty damn cute while doing it.

Ugh. Men

.

But also:

Sigh. Men.

The day wore on. Cass was on the floor, working on a jigsaw puzzle with Daniella while the baby dozed and I did homework. I was pretty good at taking notes from the chapters assigned, but I knew I was missing nuances and details you could only get in class. Cain had brought me notes from a fellow student, but I was still sure I was missing stuff. I did my best to take my education seriously. I’d been pretty lazy in high school but college was different.

Mostly because I was paying for it!

I sighed and stared at the ceiling. I was bored. I needed to do something. Anything!

“I want to go outside.”

“Me too. But we can’t.” Cass gave me a warning look. I chewed on my lip, deep in thought. She clapped her hands together to get my attention. “Don’t even think about it, Kellbelle.”

“Why? I mean, if they are already guarding us, can’t we ALL go somewhere together?”

She shrugged.

“I think its safer to keep us together. Mason might bring Michelle by later, be tee dubs.”

I threw up my hands.

“It’s a Goddamn hen house!”

She giggled and answered the door after a series of polite knocks. Hunter stood outside holding a cardboard box.

“Brought you some groceries. And there’s some other stuff.”

“Thank you, Hunter,” I piped up from the other side of the room. The big biker was quiet, with a massive mane of hair. Cass rolled her eyes and echoed me with a singsong voice. ‘Thank you, Hunter.”

He flashed a smile and we both looked a little shocked. The man had a movie star smile. It was hard to see but it was there. Cass and I exchanged a look. She shut the door and I whispered.

“Good lord, some of these guys could do freaking hair commercials.”

She giggled and carried the box into the kitchen, plopping it on the island.

“Ooh, ice cream!”

That perked me up. I lifted my head from the books and watched her.

“What else?”

“You got mail!” She held up a large envelope and waved it in the air. “Something fancy!”

I was on my feet in a heartbeat, reaching for the envelope. I stared at my name, written in elegant calligraphy.

“Well, open it!”

I didn’t need to be told twice. I was so damn bored that this felt like Christmas morning. With my luck, it would just be some sort of credit card application. I tore the envelope open and pulled out a heavy piece of paper.

Oh. My. God.

“Well, what is it?”

“It’s a wedding invitation!”

“For who?”

“Two of my customers at the diner. Oh, Cass, I’m the one who set them up!”

I clutched the invitation to my chest. My heart felt so full. I might be stuck in here with a killer on the loose, but I had done something worthwhile. I had actually made two people happy! I wanted to get up and click my heels together. I wanted to celebrate.

I’m a freaking fairy Godmother!

I chewed my lip, staring at the invitation. There was a tiny RSVP card asking me to respond right away. The wedding was in less than two weeks. Apparently, they didn’t want to waste any time.

“Oh, Cass. I have to go.”

“Of course, you do!”

“It’s in a public place. Cain will never say yes.”

“You don’t know that.”

“And if I ask and he says no, then what?”

My heart sank at the look on Cassie’s face. Cain would put his foot down and that would be the end of it. I sighed.

“That’s what I thought.”

“Well, he is your man. He only wants the best for you. Maybe you should listen to him.”

I stood up and started pacing. My mind was working overtime, sorting through the possibilities.

“No. I’m sorry. That’s not good enough. I am going to that wedding, even if I have to bring the damn killer as my plus one!”
