Their voices are too loud and nearly nauseating me as they all chatter at once but not talking to each other. Just blasting at me in unison, leaving me to sort through the chaos to hear each one. A tremble ripples down my spine. Something akin to worry flickers in Cash’s green-eyed stare, and he nods outside before reluctantly releasing my hand.

“Remy,” Cy grinds out in warning.

I’ll be fine, I sign to him. Fill out your report.

Cash turns on his heel and walks back outside. I have to pass by Van, who offers me a bored look. Cy’s outrage behind me is annoying so I block him out, trying desperately to ignore the tugs on our bond.

Once outside, Cash shoves his hands into his hoodie and smirks at me.

What? I sign.

“Don’t know what that means,” he says, green eyes twinkling.

I tap at my ear and sign, I can still hear and understand you.

He watches me for a minute and then bites on his bottom lip. A shoot of lust spikes to my groin as I notice each time his crooked incisor tugs at the puffy pink lip. My mouth waters for a taste, and before I can stop myself, I take a step closer.

“You live around here?” he asks, finally freeing his abused lip.

I nod and point in the general direction.

“Same.” He smirks. “Hey, maybe we’re neighbors.”

I’m not going to tell him what stalkers my family are and that we already know this, so I offer him a shrug of my shoulders instead.

“I don’t know anyone, Rem. Kinda cool we ran into each other.”

Remy, I sign.

Cash just laughs. “I don’t know what that means, but maybe you could text it to me.”

I have less than ten phone numbers programmed on my phone, five of which are people I live with. The other few are colleagues of Cyrus. Not only did I get Cato’s number, but now I have the incredibly hot new guy wanting to contact me too.

I hold out my hand, waiting for him to relinquish his phone. He pulls it from his hoodie pocket and sets it in my palm, his touch like electricity. Quickly, I yank it away, fixating on the phone rather than the heat rushing like a river through my veins. I create a contact under “Remy” with my number and then pass it back to him. He double-checks the number by sending me a text. My phone buzzes, and I tug it out of my pocket to read it.

Cash: I think I’ll call you Rem.

A smile tugs at my lips as I reply.

Me: And I think I’ll call you Cashper.

He snorts out a laugh. “Not everyone is an outdoorsy freak who loves nature. Some of us would be content to stay inside in the dark and read books.”

Since he can’t understand ASL, I shoot him another text.

Me: A vampire nerd?

“Funny guy,” he deadpans. “How old are you? I don’t need to be fucking around with jailbait.”

His bold words send flames of embarrassment licking over my skin. I drop my gaze to the phone to avoid his flirty stare.

Me: I’m legal. As of today.

“Today’s your birthday? No shit? Happy birthday, Rem.”

It’s happy now.

Me: How old are you?

“Just turned twenty last month.” He absently reaches for dog tags hanging from his neck, pulling them out from inside the hoodie. It seems like a nervous gesture, which makes me calm down. Maybe I’m not the only awkward person around here. “So what do you do around here for fun? Please don’t say mountain climbing. My heart can’t take it.”

Me: I like music. Writing. Reading. Truthfully, I don’t get out much.

Not by choice.

The bitterness rears its ugly head, but I tamp it down. I’m not letting Cy intrude on this moment with my new…friend.

“That changes now,” Cash says, stepping so close I can feel the heat of his body against mine. “Everything changes now that I’m here.”

The deep, seductive drawl of his voice dizzies me. I have an intense craving to pull him to me and run my nose along the column of his neck. To drag my tongue along the flesh and see what he tastes like. I nearly crush my phone in my grip, trying like hell not to scare away the new guy with my social awkwardness.

“Text me later. I’ll give you your birthday present then.” His gaze drops to my lips before darting back up again. “See you around, Rem.”

I mouth the words goodbye, Cash, shivering when his attention once again falls to my lips.

He winks and then walks away. I stare at his ass in a pair of jeans that hug him tight.

At this point, I’m going to take one for the team and fuck Remy just so he’ll stop popping boners every twelve seconds. Finnick.

The sudden onslaught of Cy’s fury at Finnick nearly ruins the best part of my day. But, since I’m fairly good at shutting those assholes out, I ignore the bond to focus on Cash as he climbs into the vehicle they arrived in.
