“Nope. You’ll have to figure it all out by yourself. If it’s not apparent to you, it’s not important.”

When he looked even more concerned, she added, “Nothing drastic is wrong with the department. There are a wide variety of personalities and motivations in any workplace. Add the stress of dealing with some of the worst situations and…” Her voice died away as Avery attempted to shield her fellow officers.

“Police work is more challenging than ever,” he agreed. “I’ll keep my eyes open and try not to miss anything.”

“That’s all you can do.”

“Promise you’ll tell me if anyone or anything threatens you.”

“I can’t do that. There could be situations where that promise would force me to lie to you. You don’t want that,” she added before yawning widely.

“I never want you to lie to me, Mae Bug. You’re too tired to continue this discussion tonight. Go brush your teeth and I’ll clean up here. I’ll be there to help you change for bed and to tuck you in.”

“Okay, Daddy.”

Avery pushed back her chair and stood. Stopping at her Daddy’s side, she puckered her lips in a silent request for a kiss. His response was sweet and no less alluring than the fiery smooches he rewarded her with at other times.

Happy, she walked down the hallway to her master bathroom and followed her Daddy’s directions. She had just rinsed her mouth and washed her face when Trace appeared in the mirror before her.

“You’re fast,” she complimented him.

“You’re dead on your feet.” He reached around her to turn on the warm water in the sink to let it heat. “Let’s get these clothes off you,” he suggested.

“I washed my face,” she assured him.

“Good job, Mae Bug. Arms up,” he directed. Within moments, he had her standing nude in front of him.

She watched him open the cabinet under the sink and remove a washcloth. He wet it under the hot water and squeezed out the excess liquid.

“Lean over the vanity, Avery. Press your breasts to the surface,” he directed and guided her into place.

“Spread your legs. Wider, Mae Bug.”

Watching him in the mirror, Avery spread her feet apart. Trace reached between her legs and gently wiped her inner thighs and pussy. When finished he washed between her buttocks.

It seemed so intimate to have him take care of her. Her Daddy didn’t try to arouse her. In fact, he hushed her quick intake of breath as he cleaned around that small opening.

“You’re okay, Mae Bug. Daddy’s helping you get comfortable for bed.”

When he finished, Trace tossed the cloth into the laundry basket. He helped her stand and swept her up in his arms.

“I’m too heavy,” Avery said, squirming.

“Let Daddy hold you close for as many seconds as possible,” he answered, tightening his arms and walking into the bedroom slowly. Trace pulled back the comforter and top sheet before kissing her hair and sitting her on the mattress.

“Lie back on your pillows and Daddy will tuck you in.”

“I can’t go to sleep without Weenie. I left her in the kitchen,” Avery told him with tears in her eyes.

“I’ll get Weenie. You close your eyes.”

“You won’t leave yet?” she asked quickly.

“No. I’ll stay until you’re asleep,” he reassured her.

“Okay.”

Closing her eyes, Avery snuggled into her pillow and sheets. When Weenie crept in between her arms, Avery sighed happily and rubbed her cheek on the cat’s soft fur.

“Try this, Mae Bug. It will help you remember that Daddy loves his Little girl.”

When she parted her lips in confusion, something slid into her mouth. It nestled perfectly against her lips and filled her mouth. A pacifier. She sucked on it cautiously and relaxed. Avery loved it.

“Daddy can’t be here to give you kisses right now. I’ve loaded a bunch up on your pacy. They’ll only come out when you’re asleep,” he warned her before adding, “Sweet dreams, Mae Bug.”

He brushed her hair away from her face before rubbing her back. Avery didn’t fight the exhaustion. She allowed herself to fall asleep so she could steal those kisses back from her pacy.

Chapter Thirteen

Avery stepped out of her car in the parking lot the next morning and pushed the door closed. She took a moment to straighten her blazer, gun, and badge. Feeling as determined to make everyone acknowledge her service and contributions as she had that first day walking into the training academy, Avery walked to the impressive entrance and through the automatic doors.

As she entered the detectives’ area, Avery thought she caught a few side glances, but was sure she was imagining it. Calling her normal greetings, she headed for her desk. The usual stack of papers was missing from the corner of her desk.

Taking a seat, she looked through the drawers and didn’t find them tucked away. She pulled out her phone to message Wyatt. Maybe he filed them for her.
